today was a very interesting day on the AT along the TN/NC line. Here are today's high and low temps for Beech Mountain, where the weather station is at about 5,070 feet. It's the best representation we have for the higher AT between the Smokies and Mount Rogers.

Today's High: 22.5°F at 3:57pm
Today's Low: 18.9°F at 11:57am

Both of these numbers are remarkable because of how low the high was for today's date (and about 1,200 feet lower than the summit of Roan High Knob), and how late in the morning (almost noon) that the temp remained in the teens. There was also snow on the ground. This is probably the most unusually cold October day in that area since October 9th-10th of 2000.

I agree, hasnt been this cold this early in a long time. Here in JC we had some snow flurries, can see alot of the trail from here, most looks dusted white. very cold today but not as windy as yesterday so more tolerable. Wish it would warm up so i could go do some trail work. Thanks for the report !

Looks like LeConte in the Smokys was a little on the cold side yesterday and last night.:cool:http://www.srh.noaa.gov/productview.php?pil=MRXRTPMRX

I hiked from Max Patch to Standing Bear Farm yesterday and this morning. We had snow flurries most of yesterday and temps at night which seemd to approach freezing. My Nalgene was not frozen which I kept in my temt with me, so I'm assuming that the overnight temps didn't get to freezing, but last nights fire certainly felt good.

I met a SoBo hiker today a little N of Damascus (where the AT and the creeper trail are one), he said the ponies by Mt Rogers had snow all over them and he had icecycles off his beard. There was a light dusting of snow where I was...maybe about 3000 ft. I think the high was about 32.

Mt. Mitchell's weather station has been without their anemometer for quite a while. I hope they fix it soon.:sun

to Beauty Spot today and the temp was reading 25* in my truck. Great views all around and no one to be found. All the red & yellow colors are hangin on for dear life now. Temp in Erwin was 40* and it is now 31* here at home. Didn't have my camera with me but took one with my phone

Exactly one year ago today there was a pretty decent snow storm that rolled through the Smoky's. Temps were in the 20's and there was at least 6-8" of snow we hiked through. At these temps, there could easlily be another one on the way...
