You probably don't have to carry any. I've found several on the AT that the boy scouts left after they realized they were so heavy and unnecessary. If you are a musician, you can bring your axe. I heard about one guy who carried his tuba.

You have to be careful carrying an axe around while hiking. You don't want to chop the wrong twig. I'd go with the other poll and bring a sword. You could be like the Ninja Paul Bunyon. Leave the beagel at home, bring a cat, and you can share his take on the food he catches.

I prefer a splitting mall with a couple or three steel wedges. The combination is great for reducing the weight of blowdowns before dragging them in for an all night fire in front of a shelter.

Hey Paul, this ain't the 1800s anymore. Screw using an axe. Just grab yourself a big 'ol Stihl 088, a 5 gal. jug of fuel mix & a gal. or so of bar oil. Nothing will stand in your way. Strap that sucker on your beagle and your good to go.

Just Jeff

Seriously - why do you need an axe on the AT? Unless you're doing trail maintenance, you can just use your ninja skills to karate chop whatever wood you need.

Or you could talk to Tha Wookie - he could probably teach you to commune with the wood and convince it to walk to your fire pit and light itself like the Native Americans did. :D

I would suggest the Martin backpacker axe. It is lightweight and has excellent tones and the neck action is really great ! :D HAIRNT !

Seriously, that is the only kind of axe I would even think of, there is just no need for an axe and I bet it wont make it out of Ga. and even so would never make it to Maine. A small super-liteweight pack-saw like I carry on work trips would be of more use and much much lighter, still I personally wouldnt carry anything like that for long distance hikes.

PB,
Pardon my typo on my last entry, It will be dead weight. IMO not needed for a thru hike and those who start with one normally send it home when they start shedding excess weight off of their back (like most hikers do). I guess though you can always use an axe in case of a Bear attack. Just cut your hiking partner's leg with it so they cannot run faster then you. What? It could happen.

Well the GB Mini is a little pricy, but you could always ask for someone to get one for you for Christmas. The dang thing is razor sharp and has a thin blade that can be used as a knife. Plus it is a quality piece of hand made gear from real craftsmen that would last you a lifetime plus some - something to pass on to your kids someday. It wouldn't only be a tool for this thru-hike. Other than something like this which could also serve uses as I mentioned (like a knife) I really cannot think of an ax like implement that I would reccomend. Even the smallest Gerber light hatchet with synthetic handle is heavier (almost twice as heavy) and the blade it too wide to serve as a knife: http://youroutdooroutfitter.com/product_info.php?cPath=158_298&products_id=1204

And that original GB mini link was a little pricy. Here you can get it a little cheaper:

You`re the one wanting to carry an axe on the trail, that in itself is "off track" :D I have seen thousands of hikers, cant recall ever seeing any "axes" other than guitars. Why ? Becaz they are too heavy and you dont need them ! You can always use the guitar axe for kindling in a emergency ;)

I've never had one myself. But after some posts about the thing over on my site I am very interested in getting my hands on one myself.

And for the record - Earl Schaffer had a hatchet ;) I remember one passage from his book where he got to camp and some people there where sort of second guessing his choice in carrying a hatchet - until he cut wood and had a fire going. I personally wouldn't carry one on a thru-hike. But since Paul is wanting to be like the original guy - maybe he should be cutting lumber on the way north.

check out the 'Fiskars' hatchets and axes at your local Home Depot. The hatchet has a light plastice handle coupled with a decent head which seems to have and hold a decent edge. The hammer on the backside has a small footprint so you need to pay attention if you are using it to pound stakes, but it's probably better for your tent, stakes, and hand then the usual flat rock.

SGT Rock
11-23-2006, 11:01
Well the Fiskars and the Gerbers are about the same hatchet - Fiskars owns Gerber. The only real difference is the Gerber comes with a more hiker friendly sheath for the head.

I just bought one of the Fiskar hatchets for $20 at home depot. It may not be quite as tiny as the Gerber and the 'sheath' is definitely not as hiker friendly, but if the price of the Gerber is the sticking point then a trip to your local Home Depot is never wasted, IMO.

But how much more exspensive is Gerber compared to Fiskars?

SGT Rock
11-23-2006, 16:54
Shop around. But here is an example:

Fiskars 14" hand axe (smallest Fiskars I could find) - $23.99 and weighs 18.6 ounces: http://www.backyardstyle.com/shop/index.php?page=shop-flypage-7710
Review: http://www.physics.mun.ca/~sstamp/knives/fiskars_hatchet.html

Gerber 14" hand axe - $27.35 and weighs the same (well it has a sheath too) http://www.ruggedoutdoorsman.com/servlet/Detail?no=3214
Review: (same as above basically)
Extra cost for the Gerber? $3.36 to get the sheath you want.

But, do you really want a hatchet over a pound and 14" long. You can get the smaller Gerber (no Fiskers in that size I could fine) here:

Gerber 9" for $27.90 (you can probably find it cheaper) weight: 17.5 ounces with sheath http://www.sportsmenexpress.com/Products/Gerber+Blades/Back+Paxe+Axe,++9%22+Clam-Packed/6233.html

None actually, not needed at all. I will be just dead weight.

If you want some options for firewood cutting, there are multiple saw options that are far more lightweight/lower bulk. I'd look at a wire saw first.

If you need an ice axe, IMO you have likely seriously screwed up with your hike scheduling. My thru took 9 months, and I never once wanted one.

You could just sew it on your pack and you'd be good to go. Better than a useless plastic axe.

Had I not given away all my Boy Scout stuff some time ago, I'd send you mine. Strange how that sort of thing works.

I don't care much for what hand axes in the hands of some people do for the appearance of a shelter's immediate surroundings.

Why in the heck do people still say "nucular"?! Do they not hear the whole world making fun of Bush about it? Can they not read? Apparently no hooked on phonics, b/c it's pronounced EXACTLY as it's spelled - NU CLE AR. Why can they pronounce "clear" but when you put a "nu" in front of it they say "cular"? I'm gonna quit saying "clear" in protest. If I can see through it, it's "cular". Like the crystal cular water in mountain streams.

That's a feature only available to those who donate to WhiteBlaze.net. It doesn't need to be lots of cash. Once a person has done so there's a button that appears in the lower right-hand corner of one's posts which can be clicked upon to edit that post.

Ordinary members can only edit their own posts. Some people can edit others posts, like this (http://www.whiteblaze.net/forum/showpost.php?p=273702&postcount=4726). Not many people can edit others posts. That was just another one of my silly slackpacking posts from MinnesotaSmith Update. Matt and I were just kidding MinnesotaSmith.

A post can be edited for up to 2 weeks if I remember correctly. After 2 weeks have passed, the post can no longer be edited. It sort of is what members of Congress do when they say they reserve the right to revise and extend their remarks. I think of it that way.

It's important to not change posts in such a way that they are no longer meaningful in the context of the thread. It would be especially bad form to alter a post so as to make someone else look foolish. I take it upon myself to limit my edits to things like punctuation, spelling and sometimes adding things, like a link or additional information. I think of it as a priviledge, one that should not be abused.

Like the dictionary says - noo-klee-er

To be fair, dictionary.com does have a blurb about pronouncing it nyukuler.

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/nuclear

In pronouncing nuclear, the second and third syllables are most commonly said as [-klee-er], a sequence of sounds that directly reflects the spelled sequence ‑cle‧ar. In recent years, a somewhat controversial pronunciation has come to public attention, with these two final syllables said as [-kyuh-ler]. Since [-klee-er], the common pronunciation of ‑cle‧ar, might also be represented, broadly, as [-kluh-yer], the [-kyuh-ler]pronunciation can be seen as coming from a process of metathesis, in which the [l] and the [y] (http://www.whiteblaze.net/forum/)change places. The resulting pronunciation is reinforced by analogy with such words as molecular, particular, and muscular, and although it occurs with some frequency among highly educated speakers, including scientists, professors, and government officials, it is disapproved of by many.

Have to admit that out here the term "BIGGER" is a matter of perception, but I think most Texans will tend to agree with you.

Well, now, those are right nice, but I once had something even better that I sold to a forestry student at UMO. They were Nokia Kevlar-lined boots with rubber bottoms, leather tops, orange and black in color. They were to the top of Katahdin once and I wore them while an MCC team leader.

That's what Paul ought to be wearing. They were really nice and I have often wished I still had them. Like many good things, they're now no longer available.

Etiquette for Hiking with an Ox

1. Always keep your ox on a rein or halter. A well trained ox will keep the same pace as you walk. A six foot halter works well. Attached to your belt, it keeps your hands free.

2. Leave No Trace (LNT). Clean up after your ox. Bury waste just like you would dig a cat hole for yourself.

3. Erect your tent or tarp 50 to 100 yards away from any shelter or campsite. Oxen and shelters do not mix! The smell of other hikers’ food, mice at night, and other distractions can be a problem. Also, some hikers don't like oxen. By keeping some distance from a shelter or campsite where other hikers are camping makes good sense, and there should be no trouble.

4. Don't let your ox near a water source. Get the water to your ox.

5. Take your ox off trail at least 10 yards when the ox needs to pee or take a dump. (No deposits on the trail!!)

6. Always remember to keep your ox under control when passing other hikers. Step off the trail a few yards to let them pass or if you pass them. Even if your ox is friendly, some folks don't want to be bothered by your ox.

7. Train you ox to bellow as little as possible when hiking with you, and to stop bellowing immediately upon command/being prodded.

Nope! Painting would be considered animal cruelty. You're gonna have to dye it blue! I'm not sure how long the dye lasts though. You had better call ahead to make tentative reservations for re-dying at the appropriate trail towns. Maybe identifying shops that can handle large dye jobs is something that ought to go into the Companion.

PS: Maybe you can get Loreal or Clairol to sponsor your hike 'cause you're going to need a whole lotta dye!

Need to get to my job which pays the ISP fees shortly. So I must post and run. I hope that's not considered a crime.:D

My attempt to help Paul find a Babe was really more along the lines pursued by halftime. I belong to an agricultural fraternity and studied and lived with students who were pursuing various degrees in the life sciences. Some of my brothers were studing animal husbandry although I never took such a course. I saw my hypothetical quest for the perfect blue ox as an opportunity to learn something about cattle breeds and to speculate about how hiking with a blue ox might work out on the virtual A.T.

Everyone not on my quest should feel free to Seek Thy Own Ox!:D I will not permit myself to be distracted from my own path to which I am now fully committed. The toy blue ox was an interesting contribution I appreciate, but I don't see that ox twitching any logs or assuming any of Paul's burden. In fact, I think Paul would end up sending it home.;)

I have no doubt about my claim, but I am sure this hike hinges on support from Texans and Mainers.

Texans know how to think big and Mainers are the most humorous people in the entire world, hence my earlier post. The second most humorous people live in New Hampshire. I think that might be because New Hampshire lies so close to Maine, but I'm not sure.;)

I wanted to try to get Samuel Clemens to contribute, but I don't think he's available. Maybe we can steal some of his ideas, if we run out ourselves.;)

Please remember, we are posting in the humor subforum.:D Sometimes people from New Hampshire and Maine can say something like was said on The Weasel's thread with a perfectly straight face while you die laughing!

Shades of Grey:
No need to be concerned: The making of a legend is well underway. No doubt that Paul Bunyon's Axe Thread is destined for greatness. It will rise above all others and will delight those who participate. Just think of the enlightening debates thus far! A brief list below only scratches the surface of what the future could bring:

1. The merits of fine cutting instruments (worthy of a legned)
2. Pracicality of such instrument as essential hiking gear
3. The very doubt (those of little faith) that such instrument would find its way past the state line. Can see a serious wager emerging here
4. History and Fokelore
5. Appropiate attire for a lumberman (aka Thru Hiker) breathable flannel?
6. Footware
6. Guitars
7. Musicians
8. Sport Drinks
8. Need for trail maintenance
10. Need for shelter improvements
11. The coloration of cattle
12. Boy Scout Merit Badges
13. Roller Hockey team logos
14. Halloween toys
15. Legalities of carrying weapons
16. Animals on the trail
17. Toilet etiquette of oxen
18. And of course-Paul Bunyons quest for the perfect Babe (done tastefully of course under the aura of a Mother's watchful eye)

I'd been invisible for much of my time here on WhiteBlaze. Always thought it would create some interesting options in the real world. While there may be some advantages on the cyber-A.T., it's not really been all that exciting.

So my green light is on and I see there are others too.

Oh, for pack colors, the Mountainsmith is green, the REI is orange, grey, and green.

If you want a Photoshopped pack with a Paul Bunyan Woodsman axe on it, maybe that could be arranged. Maybe the "axe" could be put on a photo of your winter pack until we could get you the actual patch if you want to go that route.
