Does anyone have any experience with this?

Doing Match Patch to Hot Springs this weekend. Anyone have any memories of the area in NC?

Several folks here have experience with winter thru-hiking. Fiddlehead, Wolf22000, and Grizzly Adams to name a few. Another fellow southbounded in 2000 and started in Maine on 1/1/2000. Mr. Clean was his trail name. He ended up quite sick with Lyme Disease. I met him in Massachussetts at Upper Goose Pond in July.

Regarding Max Patch to Hot Springs, its a lovely section. There is a new shelter just north of Max Patch (Roaring Fork). Walnut Mountain Shelter is an oldie but a goodie. The trail north of Max Patch is beautiful with lovely rhododendron, rushing streams, and some large hemlock trees. Enjoy!

It ain't winter yet. Temps. will be in 50s during the day, 30s at night. It's a fairly easy 20 miles.

Chris, this is a fantastic hike, esp this time of year! It's a good overnighter or a good LONG dayhike depending on your plans. I like hikes that include a "reward" at the end. This hike has many rewards! Enjoy a hearty meal at Smoky Mtn Diner and top it off with a soak in the Hot Springs Spa! There is other more upscale fare, also, if you prefer. Be sure to stop off at Bluff Mtn Outfitters--Wayne and Daniel are great!!

Have a great time!!
