View Full Version : Speaking of the cost of replacing gear...
From the recent previous post, Im just wondering how much it would cost to replace your specific hiking gear if lost or stolen while on the trail? Would/do you have some kind of insurance on it? If so, what kind?

About $700 for me. I ain't got no fancy stuff.
About $600 to $700 for me as well, nothing fancy either but it's worth alot to me and I would be mighty upset if something happened to it.

A lot of mine is homemade... probably about $1,500 for both dinos and at least 200 man-hours.

What specific gear do you guys use? I just added up my current gear list for my 07 hike and I'm at about $3k.

I think you need to also think about where you replace that gear. If at home, it might be cheaper than at one of the outfitters along the trail. When I had to replace a poor fitting pack and worn out boots in Damascus I dropped about $400. And another $100 plus in Hot Springs. Of course that was partly because I wasn't properly geared when I started my hike.

Most homeowners' insurance policies will cover thefts, although a deductible will apply.

I'll take a swing at the details, more or less accurate (based on memory and reasonable guesswork):
Pack - GoLite: 100
Sleeping Bag (down) - Mountain Hardwear: 400
Stove/titanium pot/cup/spork/fuel (yeah, I used gas, I like it): 100
Platypus/water treatment: 25
Knife/small repair items/small first aid/photon light: 50
Hammock or tent (I alternate, averaged): 200
Extra clothing (socks, sweater, longjohns, underwear): 150
Food (10 days, at start; averaged to 5 days): 50
Stuff sacks (food, clothes, sleeping bag): 25
Journal/pocket Bible: 25
Trekking poles: 100
Total 1225
Doesn't count worn clothing
Not an equipment "list". Shorter trips I sometimes have more stuff and less food, which ups the value (stuff costs more than eats usually).
