i just got a simmerlite and after lighting it the first time the bottom is covered in black soot, is this normal?

Yes, it happens with mine. I think its from the priming. It usually flakes off to some degree.

mine too... i think it's the priming. the initial 'burn' isn't too efficient or hot, and not all of the gas gets completely burned up...

just wipe is down with a wet bandana every once in a while. (or not...it doesnt really matter)

There's a reason why the sack for the MSR stoves is black.

prime it with alcohol and you will not get any soot. Of course then you have to carry two fuels.
