Let's say you're going north and are treated to a soda out of a cooler. You take only one, drop the can in the trash or pack it out, and leave a note of thanks. Later on that day, you encounter someone going south. Should you tell them that there's magic a few miles ahead of them, or let them have the great suprise moment and not come to expect it?

Personally, I like the suprise.

Let them be surprised... because there's nothing worse than getting your hopes up only to find the the last soda was had by that group of 10 day hikers you let pass you during your rest break.

Day hikers are entitled too.

Not saying they're not. Just saying it's a blow to just miss out on expected soda.

Let them be supprised.

And if you want to really supprise them - put a snake in the cooler.

I was in a situtation of being the one told about trail magic, but we decided that it would probably be gone by the time we got there. And when we got there and it was still there, that made it very exciting!!!

Yep, good to see SMS has returned!

I'd be suprised to hear about Trail Magic ahead. Imagine taking a break just before the surprise and 10 scouts pass by or the hiker who thinks its an AYCE.

Once we kept hearing about magic ahead and were really looking forward to meeting these "great people". When we got there we were not welcome. No water, no sit beside the fire and visit and don't EVEN think about that soda. Why?... because we had only planned to do a little more than half the trail.

Why would anyone drink a soda and not pack out the can? Litter is not cool.
