Just in case anyone is looking for something awesome to do this week/weekend....

I hiked the Boogerman Trail in the GSMNP this weekend and was blown away by the scenery. Also, about 3/4 mile south of the trailhead and next to the ranger station are a bunch of elk, males and females. When we were there, the elk were crashig heads and locking horns.

I highly recommend this trip for people in and around the WNC/ETN area.

Cheers!

The News-Record & Sentinel, Marshall, NC, reported in the Dec 13, 2006 edition that elk #81 from the Smoky Mtn herd was spotted across the French Broad River near Walnut (Madison County). After the young male wandered around in the area for several days, GSMP personnel rounded him up and returned him to the "designated habitat in Cataloochee". Hikers might well spot these animals, as the elk aren't bound in any way to stay at home! There is no online link to the article.

It's farther to drive, but you could come see Pennsylvania's elk (http://www.pgc.state.pa.us/pgc/cwp/view.asp?a=471&q=150286).

I have hiked nearly every trail in the Smokeys and never saw any elk. Bummed I moved out west and now see them all the time. Maybe I should consider moving back.

I have never seen elk east of the Mississippi.

I remember once driving in northern AZ in the winter and seeing herds of them huddled together. They are massive!

What beautiful creatures. :sun

The Cumberland Plateau in Tenn is considering an Elk hunt in 2008. It seems the herd there is thriving. They are putting limits on the hunt.

A couple years ago some guy strapped the biggest deer he had ever shot/seen to his car roof north of the smokeys and proceeded to show it off to all his buddies . Later on he was arrested for shooting one of the elk for some odd reason the locator collar didn't help the hunter.
