One of the major reasons I choose to be an early voter beore I moved from NC to GA was to get Charley Taylor out of office. Although i have issues with Shuler, atleast his environmental stances seem to align with mine. Another great victory was outing Pombo in CA. According o the League of Conservation Voters atleast 8 of "The Dirty Dozen" got defeated. If anything else Americans deserve clean air and water.

Can I have an Amen? I hope some of you will get out and hike the BMT along the north shore of Fontana Lake. Generoll has done it, and Youngblood and I hiked it this past March (http://americanhiking.chattablogs.com/archives/033975.html).

It's a really nice alternative to the ridge walks offered by the AT in the park.

Amen!

I think Taylor wanted to push the "Road to Nowhere" through the Park which would have wiped out the BMT in that section. I'd be willing to bet Taylor (or his company) was in line to sell off the trees.

I don't know about the tress, but... Taylor's Chief of Staff personally told me (last February) that "Congressman Taylor doesn't want the entire road built." He informed me that Taylor did want to see "some" development inside the park so that the area could pull tourists away from Gatlinburg & Pigeon Forge into the NC side of the park. One thing that became clear during the conversation was that there was obviously no love lost between the Congressman and Senator Lamar Alexander from Tennessee. Alexander opposed the road.

Then, during the campaign, Taylor stated he wanted to see the road built. Oh well... He'll soon be gone.

Taylor's been known as "Chainsaw Charlie" for years. If I could find 21 willing volunteers with chainsaws I think it would be most fitting to salute his last day in office with a "21 chainsaw salute," preferably in Pack Square in downtown Asheville. Any volunteers? :D

On a related note, anybody know if the I-3 situation has changed?
I just can't imagine an interstate highway through Helen and Unicoi Gap:(

That damn project is a complete loser. I'm not totally against some sort of "sustainable" development in areas, but very few folks were on board with that road. Keep the hell out of there with the road, shuttle the 15 folks with kin in the cemetaries by 4 wheeler if you have to, and take the fed buyout monies.
