Snakeskins – Snakeskins are a tapering cloth tubes that slide over the hammock when you are storing it. Snakeskins make it easier to setup and break down the hammock system, and can also help to keep the hammock dry. Python Skins are oversized snakeskins that are large enough to hold the hammock and an underquilt. They were manufactured by Jacks R Better until Hennessy announced a patent pending, but the term is still used to refer to oversized snakeskins

Here's a pic of my hammock and underquilt that have been "skinned" It's two tubes of silnylon (one at each end of the hammock). You just roll the hammock/underquilt and pull the tube over each end. Mine are long enough to overlap.

Here's a pic of my hammock/underquilt skinned and my tarp skinned (the tarp skins are made from a mesh netting to allow air to get to it)

In this pic, my hammock is hung and you can see the white material bunched up at the end...this is one of the skins for my net. You can also see the gray skin bunched up that goes on my hammock.

Imagine it was raining when you had to set up your hammock. Michele's first photo shows how you could hang your hammock without getting it wet, or have it being blown about in a wind. When setting your hammock up, if in a skin, you can have it be on the ground without worry. When sleeping on the ground under a tarp, I store the tarp in a skin, set it up over my head. If it is not raining, I can just leave it hanging in the skin. If rain awakes me during the night, can just sit up, push back the skins, and I am under an open tarp. Stake out the corners, all the time under the shelter, and I am soon back to sleep. Snakeskins are the way to go.

Look for "shelter"......this is about as complete as it gets with regard to "how to" basics for HH.
