I started setting up my hike back in 2001 or so for 2007. Some guy asked why I was waiting specifically for 2007. Waiting for my son to be inbetween schools, I told him. You're never too early to start and to celebrate.

My plan is for 2013. My older son will be graduating HS that year, and I am already telling everyone I know that I am off for 6 months that year to thru-hike with him.

Great!!

I remember saying that when my son was three years old in 1993. :D

Now he's fixing up his "axe" to take with him on the thru next year.

Kind of amazing.

Billyboy, count me in. I'll hit 65 in 2012 but think I'll probably work a year or so extra. In the meantime I'm doing a lot of section hiking, but I do want to do a thru when I retire. Are you thinking nobo or sobo?

Traditional hike "NOBO" :D Been backpacking for over 20-years and each year I try to be on the AT when the "Thru-hikers" are coming thru our area. I very much enjoy meeting the "Thru-hikers", so NOBO will allow meeting/making new friends. These friendships last a life-time:sun

Billyboy- I hope you and all the class of 2013 keeps trail journals, This way I can read about your hikes, while I am planning my start in 2014. 2013 sounds better but I will still be working then, I am planning on completing 30yrs in the Navy before thru-hiking.

Keep the dream alive

Hmm, 2010 was my goal three years ago, as it would be right when I am finishing my Masters. Well, got to get through freshman year first!

Brian- You will have to watch out about that 'TIME' thing..... I planned to hike the AT in 1988 but stayed in the Navy instead (for just one more tour) Now look what has happened, 23 years and I don't know where the TIME has gone.

Good luck in school, study hard and all that kinda stuff

Congrats on 30-yrs in the Navy. I was in the Navy myself during the 60's, aboard a Tin Can, USS MacDonough DLG-8. BT-2 (forward Fireroom)

:-? Ok! Been a while since this thread was posted  Do we have any new folks planning to be part of the "AT Class of 2013"?

How about a RUCK, over a weekend, some where, sometime, to meet each other, once a year, leading up to 2013?

If interested, e-mail me! I'll get something going, even set us up a special web site :welcome

I thought I had been involved in a 2013 thread. I dd a search and found the other "2013" thread: http://www.whiteblaze.net/forum/showthread.php?t=34130&highlight=2013

I too am planning on being a part of the Class of 2013.

My situation is my son will graduate from dental school in 2012. If he decides to come home he will have a practice to join/take-over. I would be able to work with him for 9ish months to get him used to the "real world".

Then in the spring of 2013 I go on my adventure. My wife is on board with "shadowing" my trip in an RV. She would move north as I do allowing me to sleep in my own bed from time to time.

You seem like a good guy, so seriously, please consider not waiting that long. I do believe the trail will still be there, however I also believe important things like lack of water and increases in crime will make the experience much harder. Just my opinion, from 10 years of hiking it.

:welcome OK! Chinmusic has given me an idea :-? IF! You are planning to be a part of the "AT Class of 2013", please do the following; send me your name, mailing addy, e-mail addy, Trail name, age and I wil start making a Spreadsheet/Contact list so as we can follow/support each other from now, till our feet take that first long awaited step. May even beark down and make us our own website for the 2013 Class (it's a hobby).

Our oldest son finally finished school! He was first a CPA (practiced for 1-year after he passed the CPA Boards), then returned to school for an MD (UVA-Med School). He is in practice here at home as a Hospitalist at the General Hospital. The wife and I may never recover fully financailly :datz

Hence, I must work another 4-years, to the age of 65, before I can retire.

By 2013, gas will be $50 a gallon; you'll have to walk from your house to the trailhead, do a yo-yo, and walk back home. I'm only half joking. I think it'll be a different world in 2013. I can't think that far ahead.

We're planning for 2013, as well. Also waiting for son to graduate from HS; oldest daughter will be junior in college, so both will take spring semester off to accompany DH. Youngest child and I will keep the home fires burning.

Glad to see there are others planning so far out!

Well now that someone else has started the thread for the Class of 2013 I'll not make a commitment yet but will only say, HOPEFULLY I'll be joining you all. :-?
I've tried unsuccessfully about 5 or 6 times to make the trip but something has always prevented it from happening. :(
I'm ready mentally and I'm in pretty darn good shape, (I think so anyway). The biggest thing right now is getting my financial situation in shape, once that is in order, LOOK OUT AT, here I come. :D
In the mean time I'll probably do some section hiking of the AT as well as some of the other trails here in East TN and KY. :sun

Spring, 2013, NOBO, is my target too. I can retire in Oct 2012 if I want to. Otherwise it will be 2016 and I don't want to wait three MORE years.

:sun Still hoping to be a member of the Class of 2013, although, I had a small speed bump May 09! Bladder Cancer which was a high-grade Cancer, with a return rate of 50 - 80%. So, if I can avoid the return, I still hope to be there:D

Pardon me for asking: If the OP was this year, and the hike starts in 2013, BUT Billyboy doesn't retire for 6 years, how can he do the trail as a thru hike? 2010 + 6 years = 2013??

According to Lynn Setzer's book "A Season on the Appalachian Trail" that I'm reading right now, on page 107, he reports that the 17-year cicadas will be making an appearance in '013'.

George, good to hear from you and that you MAY be making the hike that year. Ya! I miss getting the hike organized up there in IN and I really miss all of the ones I hiked with. Maybe I'll have to move back up North. ha! ha!:D

Forget the math, etc., etc. Unless the present Whitehouse STAFF (in DC) screws with SS, I will retire July 2012:banana

Spend the rest 2012 getting ready, and if I can keep Cancer from returning , I'll be a SOBO'er in 2013 (at 65-yo) :-?

George: I did buy a "Pocket Rocket" before leaving IN and some Aqua Mira.
I'll wait until the date gets closer before deciding on what else I might want to replace.
I had a job interview yesterday (09/29/2010) and expect to hear from several other places I applied at. Hopefully "one" of them will give me a job.
