We do not know at this time, but in the past three years it has been taken place either the second or third weekend of September.

The annual Billville Winter Warmer is usually held in late February or early March, at the Doyle Hotel in Duncannon. We're usually there all weekend, with one of the afternoons usually given over to a work/maintenance project, perhaps at the Ironmaster's Hostel in nearby Pine Grove Furnace Park. It's a fun event and all are welcome. Will post more information/dates, etc., when I know them.

I knew about the Winter Warmer and the Hiker feed in Duncannon next year and I wrote to Trail Angel Mary asking for dates. I assumed that was who I was suppose to ask. I have not heard back from her yet.

Was I suppose to ask for her or should I get a hold of Jester?

I don't know if the dates for the Warmer have been set yet, but Jester's probably the best person to ask, but he might not know yet either!

I'm assuming Mary has something planned for Duncannon next July, but I don't know if anything is set yet for sure. I expect to be on the Trail somewhere at the time and while I assume Jester will be around next summer, Mary's probably the best person to ask about that event. I can only assume that she didn't get back to you with dates or more information because things haven't been decided yet.

Will it involve the water source issue there? IMO that was the biggest drawback to what was otherwise a very good shelter. (I was worried about it being near a road, but that was no problem.)

Kevin A. Boyce
11-26-2006, 16:23
MS... Not to hijack the thread, but to answer your question... No, there are no plans to address the water at the shelter... They installed the new pump a few years back, and surprisingly, it helped clear the water some what. The water there is just very heavy on the iron, hence the rusty colored water. It will not hurt you... For those that do want clearer water, there is always the stream out back of the shelter, you can pump / treat from there, that water source is fine as well.

The extra rust is mainly a cosmetic problem, and yes, I agree, it does take away from the overall quality of staying there...

I can say that over the years I have used the pump as a water source, and after adding some gatorade, it has been OK to me... I have never gotten sick from it, and have yet to hear anyone having a problem with it either.

I will talk to the official maintainer though and pass along your comments... Who knows what can be done.

Hey ATTroll... lately I have seen a few websites that you can download a wallpaper for your desktop that had a calendar on part of the screen. They usually have a seasonal scene, and in part of the screen shot is a calendar... Maybe something like that listing what is going on that month.

I know your plate is full already, and I am sure you would love to get out and hike more then just running a hiking website, but that might be a cool idea... Maybe something available only to donating members to get a few more folks... Any photo folks out there know what I am talking about and maybe could lend a hand?

In the past we have never really had a booth in the park. I have hang out at Fishin Fred's booth on main street a little in the past. I am going to look into WhiteBlaze having a booth this year at Trail Days in the park all by ourselves. The only problem with this is that it leaves me or SGT Rock strapped to the booth all day long. We like to get out and visit just like everyone else does.

What sort of volunteers is the MATC looking for? Same question for MATLT.
The Little Bigelow lean-to, campsite and side trail maintainer assignment is available. The site is 1.3 miles and 600' of elevation gain from the East Flagstaff road. This site is in good shape but needs a maintainer who will make at least three visits during the season to keep the area respectable and submit timely reports to the overseer. Anyone interested in this assignment may apply ASAP and I will contact all applicants by Spring. Bigelow District Overseer, Dick Fecteau, 284 Ramsdell Rd., Farmington, Me. 04938.

In addition, Maine seeks trail crew volunteers to work with the Maine Conservation Corps on large projects. Volunteers need no special skills. They will work under paid leaders that are skilled in major trail repair work. These volunteers typically come to Maine for a week or more between May and October. Trail Crews repair, restore, and stabilize eroding sections of the trail to help preserve this national treasure.

The chapter has lost it's lease on ita volunteer base camp and is presently planning a major fundraising campaign to raise the money needed to buy land and to build the needed housing.

The Maine Appalachian TRail Land Trust is presently planning and raising money to help protect the high peaks region that surrounds the trail in Western Maine between Old Speck and Bigelow. We mostly need money to pay our one-person staff and to do the basic research needed to attract major investors.

Still going to be Starbuck's for me. I ground up some Eight O'Clock last week and when I drank some of the first cup, I emptied it and the pot out and made a pot of my normal Starbuck's. It was sooooooo good. :)

I get it for less than $7.00 at Wal-Mart and a bag last me for a week. I'll spend 7 bucks a week for something I like anytime. :-?

I have the calendar done. I have included two photos for samples. I am displaying the month of February in the photo. The picture does not show the true size of the calendar, that is why I stuck a yard stick next to it. Each page of the calendar is 13 x 19 inches.

The price of the calendar is not bad, it is 19.95 with $1 of it going to WhiteBlaze. The shipping price is what is outrageous. The shipping is $9.74. I have no control over the shipping. The calendar is a print on demand calendar. So it has to be ordered through the book company. It may be cheaper for shipping if a couple people went in together to get the calendar. The total price for the calendar and shipping is $29.69.

I thought I would post the pictures if anyone is interested. I am just trying to try and find way to bring in more revenue for the web site. I understand if the calendar is to expensive. If you don't buy one then we are not out any money, that is the good thin about it.

I contacted Jester about the dates for the Billville Hiker Feed and have no response yet.
Chomp, the organizer of the Winter Warmer sent an email out to Billville members about their opinion on dates for the Winter Warmer in Duncannon. He said in the email that he would post date here.

Believe me, the price is worth it. December's photo is a picture of The Goat, nekkid but for a pair of boots and a strategically placed Santa hat.
