I couldn't resist the chance to post this with the sword reference. Rather than resurrect that old thread, I thought I'd start a new one. I found this article about a bear attack in Bhutan:

My favorite quote?
“It freed me after I stabbed him thrice in the stomach with my Bachem (short sword),” he said.

also:
“You should play dead if you see a bear,” Namgay said. “The best way to prevent an attack is to shout always when you are alone in the forest.”

This settles it for me. From now on I'm hiking with a short sword and a bullhorn.

:)

Maybe this is why Tuba Guy carried his Tuba--to scare off bear?

I would think that one of those small compressed air horns would be effective for a bear deterent. Not that heavy to carry, but very loud. Not to be used around a crowded shelter unless a bear is very aggressive.

Or unless you don't like your neighbors in the shelter.

...after which you'll get to use your sword to defend yourself against the neighbors! :D

And to smash their cell phones so they can't call any support.
