View Full Version : Removing an anti-theft device.

I found a light pair of nylon pants yesterday at a thrift store but there's a problem.

Apparently they had been donated by another retailer because they have an anti-theft device still attached to the waistband.

Do any of you delinquents know how to remove one of these without tearing something up?

Depends on the type of device. Some have a packet of ink incorporated in the design so the ink will explode on the clothing if the device is tampered with. Others can be easily removed with a pair of plyers and a little squeezing. However, the easiest way is to walk into a regular clothing store with your receipt from the thrift store and ask if that other store will remove it for you. Clerks are used to patrons returning with items still bearing the device. It doesn't happen often but it happens often enough. Having your receipt will smooth things along.

Good luck.

If they were donated to the thrift store by a retail store, the retail store should have removed the tags (price and security). The thrift store might even have the device to remove the tag. In my area it is not uncommon for people to shoplift and then sell them to the thrift stores. some thrift stores do buy items from the public. :-?

If you get stuck having to remove it yourself, maybe fashion a split box to slide over the theft device to contain the ink. This would make a great video, please please record:sun .

Cover the device with a plastic bag to contain the ink, and then take a hacksaw to it.

BTW, you gonna get a video of that?

Cover the device with a plastic bag to contain the ink, and then take a hacksaw to it.That's good too. A little extra shielding under the tag just in case? I was mildly concerned about any force, but it is probably very minimal. Now on my last bank job...

Depending on the type....some use a strong magnet to pull the pin out, so get one of those and try it. If that fails...I always love having an excuse to get out my big hammer! Besides...who cares if a little ink gets on your pants..I bet you'll have much worse on them after hiking for a few days AND nobody can steal your pants without you being able to identify them! :D

I like the hammer idea. It lacks finesse, but that is part of the attraction.

I think a nice claw hammer would do it - claw end down.

A vice would provide more finesse than a hammer.

It's off folks.

I used hammer and a dremel tool.

Counting my labor in the tally, I figure my $2.48 rainpants cost closer to $22.48.

There was no paint packet; It was a simple sensor to trip the door alarm. Sorry Alligator. :D

Reading the responses turned out to be much more entertaining than I expected. Thanks all!

Of course, after you figure out how big of an ink stain... just make a much larger stain of some other ink... then it just looks like you're sloppy. ;)

no, no ... you just need to find multiple uses for it. is it big enough to use for a pot lid? small enough to wrap dental floss around? shiny enough for an emergency mirror?

Yeah what I pain. I kept setting off the alarm at Walmart for the longest time. Couldn't figure out why. Come to find out it was this tiny little security thing that I had cut off a pair of sunglasses I got for a donation at a church. I had stuffed the tag in a side pocket of my purse.

I used to work in a bike shop, and when we weren't putting ball berrings into the seat tube, we were putting the sticker type security strips everywhere we could fit one. Insde the stem, inside the tires, inside the seat post. Lots of laughs.

if you take them to a store to get the tag removed, make sure it's not one where the product is carried!

Ok, For future reference, I'll tell you all the method. If it's one of those tage that's a rectangular piece of plastic with sort of a short cone on one end, you can use a rubber band to get it off. Cut a rubber band so it's just a long piece, then get it between the cloth and the large part of the tag. Wrap it around and around, and eventually the tag will just pop off. No fuss, no muss.
