Yeah they are!
I went through every NC/TN state views and trail/blazes in the photo gallery. There were lots of photos I could have picked but obviously had to limit the choices and to those that I thought would make good nametags allowing for "Southern Ruck" and the names.

Besides being just a get-together, Rucks have been traditionally been held to help the coming years hikers with the more experienced lending expertise and suggestions about gear and such. Bring your pack/gear to get Tucked!

I decided on a prize for the winning photographer, if they allow me to use their photo that is. :p A large printed photo of the winning pic (on real photo paper no less) of the nametag with their name. Maybe I'll even throw in a frame! :sun

Not only is it COLD but most always-there is SNOW! Not a problem tho'---plenty of hiker family to keep us warm!

BTW, I went out and hiked from Table Rock to Canebrake a few days ago. It was stupid cold. One night I ended up surviving a 10 degree night with a 30 degree bag. Cold, I tell you.

Sorry if I misunderstood. I don't have the email, but I took it that you would probably be coming, but not necessarily that you wanted to rent a cabin room. Unfortunately, I don't have any cabin rooms left, they filled up quick. I'm still waiting to hear from a couple, so if you want me to put you on that list, I will. In the meantime, if I were you I'd call NOC and atleast reserve a spot in the bunkhouse.
Ewker's on the nametag list, open to the 1st 100. Would you like nametags, to be put on that list?
BTW, for anyone that's wondering. We rent out the cabins at NOC and they're on a 1st come, 1st serve basis, with priority to those that rented the year before. If I can't fill them, I open them to the "public" at large, but that's seldom the case.

Sure we'll notice if you're not there!
The fine folks at the NOC don't go around checking the bunkhouses, they only have womens and mens because that's what the law expects. However, they may have one for couples, that's not unheard of. If not, since mostly free spirits attend I don't think others will mind if you shack up with your wife!
Plus, there re other options. I think it was Egads that has a room at the Nantahala Inn he's willing to share. Motels in Bryson City and Franklin. Hikers are resourceful, you'll find a way if you want to come...

It cost over $1500 up front to reserve the cabins, which Clyde and I split. I try to do my best to fill them or I'm out money. If someone says they want a room in a cabin, pays and then can't make it, the NOC doesn't reimburse me. I'm personally not going to be held responsible if someone can't make it, although I'll do my best to sub-rent their room.

can I assume that Iwould find a heated room somewhere around there if I went to the Southern Ruck without a reservation? The trip is beginning to appeal to me but I want know for a while yet if I can drive up. How cold could it be? we have not had enough here to sweeten the grapefruit on the trees:D

I'm not taking sides here. I've organized enough horse clinics and other gatherings to know how much an organizer has on there plate. It's a thankless task.
Here's how I came to do it, to be fair and to save my sanity. Once someone"committed," they had to send in their deposit - they couldn't reserve that slot for certain until the money was in hand. That just keeps everything clean, Folks are enthusiastic at first, and then other things come up.
Secondly, I made sure at the outset that once paid for, that person "owned" their slot. If something came up and they slot-owner couldn't make it, they were responsible for re-selling i, or absorbing it. Sometimes I'd shot out an email telling folks about the availability, but I wouldn't handle the switch. I'd direct folks to the original owner.
Personally, I thank you a bunch for all you're doing. The Rucks of the past few years have been terrific and fun. And Frank, I hope you and Squeaky make it too.

Highway, all NOC facilties have heat, including the basecamp bunkhouses, which only run $14 per night. However, they don't have sheets and blankets so you'll need to bring a sleeping bag. Last I heard they only have a limited number of spots left. You can call them toll free at 800 232-7238 during normal business hoursand ask. I believe you can cancel up to 10 days beforehand. Other than that, there's a link on the website for motels in the area, some as close as mile away.
Overnight averages are about 25* for that time of year, with days normally in the mid-50's.

I didn't mean what you heard me mean.
Yeah, the guy that took our place paid us. It wouldn't have been your fault even if he didn't.
The not being able to go had nothing to do with room availability, just the flu.

Stayed in a bunkhouse last year, heater worked great! Comfortable in my summer bag. BTW, there was a couple who stayed in the bunkroom next to mine all by themselves, so they might rent a bunkroom to a married couple, don't know. Some of us were fortunate enough to get pictures.
Some of us sent Clyde those pictures.
Clyde is making a DVD slide show.
Clyde is showing said DVD at the Southern Ruck.
So now we can no longer say....>"What happens in cabin C STAYS in cabin C".....right Rosalyn?
We can only hope for the best.....I suppose.

A trip to NOC (from Boston) just isn't in the cards, much as I'd like to meet some of these characters. I'm saving every scrap of vacation time for next years' section. I've given some thought to the PARuck. And if/when the ALDHA gathering comes back up to New England, for sure.

Well, actually, it's my own shortened version of Humuhumunukunukuapua'a - the state fish(I think) of Hawaii . I just like how it sounds (I'm not from Hawaii) and the long version is, well, long.

I just read the info about the southern Ruck and it certainly sounds interesting. I wonder....:-?
But its that 19 degree F in Franklin on the site that is just a little deterrant, though:cool:Highway"I know all good things must end but today the temp got up to 72 here in fun country Franklin,NC.If it will hold out til the Ruck,I hope to see several there.Also Sly we won't have no trouble getting the bus there.

sly...kinda late comment....but any way to move spur and ready's grand canyon show to saturday? we wont make it there until late friday night and i hate that we will miss their slides. i bet several others are in the same boat, driving after work friday. they do such a good job. and we definitely plan to hit their CDT slideshow.

I'll see what I can do but due to prior commitments and schedules of the others, it's hard to switch things around. "Subject to change" usually means someone is dropping out and if someone does, I'd be able to change it... maybe we can get Spur to do an encore presentation Sunday after Jim and Ginny..
