Thank to some fair weather hikers for trying to scare other away from hiking during the best time of year. Yea winter hiking is colder then the summer but so what. Big Deal. It also has less people out. The hikers that are out are general more a hard core bunch that don't wine about every little thing. And the views can be incredible!!! My winter Maine pictures showed Maine in a total different spot light that few hikers will ever see.

It just takes being prepared. South of NY in the winter is really not that hard. Some of the things you have to deal with is less place open in town which has some plus and negatives, less day-light hours which has some advantages sleeping under the stars on a brisk night next to a warm fire, less people - leading to a more peaceful night sleep.

I encourage anyone to try winter hike but just be smart about it.

No boyscouts in the winter. (maybe)

Note: I was a boyscout. It was wonderful. Boyscouts bring young men into the wilderness, and that's great.....but they're REALLY noisy/messy/dangerous.

Last group of Scouts I met had three leaders, and none of them knew that you had to purify stream water. Upon hearing this, one of them guessed that it'd be okay if they boiled it for 10 or 15 minutes.

Funny thing is, Mt. Mitchell was a balmy 51.1 degrees around 1 pm today. I'm an hour away and its probably close to 60 outside. Crazy weather...:-?
