There is actually a book out on the subject. I'll see if I can find my copy and give you author information. The title is (simply enough), "Freezer Bag Cooking."

It's a great way to eat on the trail.

Best bets: Buy Glad or Ziploc bags only. Use a spoon to eat with( no sporks or forks). Rig a cozy (I have a section on cozies on the site), and use it.
This is a good intro on the concepts and ideas:

Sarbar (Sarah) knows more about this than practically anyone and her recipes are yummy. I use a regular pot, but use a lot of ideas and recipes inspired by Sarbar :)

I just got a Jet Boil this evening. Specifically to make it easier to switch over to FBC. :)

I did this yrs ago with a neat little product called a "bakepacker" which is a small lightweight grid that is about inch or so thick that goes in the bottom of your two quart billy pot and allows heat to be concentrated more into the little cubes of space and allows actual baking in cooking bags. I have made cornbread, pizzas, biscuits, muffins, and cooked all kinds meals and also excellent for rewarming food and best part is never have to clean anything !

A question in the general area of freezer bag baking: has anyone tried baking in the fairly new reusable / disposable plastic containers? I would love to bake on the trail and doing so without sticking to metal pans just doesn't seem possible - I prefer not to use baggies because of concerns about cooking in the less chemically stable plastic used in baggies.

FD, have you thought about using turkey roasting pans? They make smaller ones now, and they also make liner pans for crock pots-those are designed to be in heat for long periods. You might try that!

Good suggestions -- and solid evidence that my confidence in your knowledge and creativity is well-placed :)

Well, don't pat me tooooo hard, I meant to write "turkey roasting bags" this morning . I am sure someone would read what I wrote and think "turkey roasting pan?" Lol!!
(The bags are sold alongside ziploc bags and saran wrap usually)

And this morning I had old-fashioned oatmeal "cooked" in my Evazote freezer bag cozy. It was a nice surprise that it worked, but a good one. :)

If you truly want to start freezer bag cooking get a food dehydrator. Sarbar's site is great and the recipes are good but I find it easier to just dehydrate left overs. That way when I prep for a trip All I do is take the food out of the freezer and throw it in the food bag. Just did homemade mac and cheese beef stroggi and pasta and sauce. It's all vac sealed in the freezer just waiting for boiling water.

Here are pics from my SNP trip did chili Yum!!!
