No one will ever know...
But the ATC will post on their website the number of people who have reported in to them claiming to have achieved 2000 miler status in 2006 sometime in 2007.

I'd love to know final numbers of those who signed in at Springer, Harper's Ferry AND Katahdin.

Blue and Miyagi were the last MEGAs, numbers 486 and 487, to check in at Katahdin Stream before it closed to overnight camping on Oct 15th. Baxter collects detailed data for the ATC regarding AT hikers, but it is not publically published as far as I know.
The best count in my opinion, if you're trying to put a number on 'how many nobo thru-hikers this season?' is the tally taken by Steve the Ferryman at the Kennebec. http://www.riversandtrails.com/

I'm impressed at the very close correlation between Steve's numbers and the Baxter numbers. It appears that only three unlucky souls dropped out between the liquid K and the mountain K.

:banana On Dec 16 I met a SOBO (Easy-Feeling) at Brown Mtn Creek in Central Va.

He was going to get off the trail at Troutdale, Va go home (NC) for Christmas, then return to Troutdale and complete his SOBO-Thru.

You can follow his trip on Trailjournals :D

Have a merry Christmas!
