Hey, I'm very excited. I just applied for a specialized AT license plate with the personalized letters "SOBO". I can't believe it wasn't already taken. This is going to be so cool.

Now I just have to finish my hike....

Alas, too many characters.

The NCDMV is asking a lot for us to come up with inoffensive four-letter words...

SOBO was a score for sure. I just got a numbered plate, soon to be retired since I moved to GA.

Yeah, really. I guess I can never move away from North Carolina. (Argh!) Or I'll have to keep a car here anyway.

I read once a AT plate number is taken it can never be used again. Since I intended on moving around the time the plates 1st came out I never ordered one. Once those plans changed, I got one. 0364. Not bad, but not in the initial run of 300. Now I see they're up over 2000. I'll be saving it to put on my wall

Now I see they're up over 2000.

That's interesting. Driving around Charlotte before I started hiking this summer, I'd see an AT plate every once in a great while. But on the way back from Fontana Friday night, I saw two just in Charlotte, plus another one or two on the highway. That's what reminded me to get one, actually--I have not been thinking a great deal about my car over these last few months.

Except to think that when one is not working and not driving, and one is getting lots of exercise, one can drink a lot more beer without adverse consequences.

I used to see quite a few up around Asheville. One day I saw 0001 and emailed Clark who said it was WNC State senator Sam Queen's who was instrumental in getting the plate passed.

As it is, over $55,000 a year is given to the ATC for work in NC. I think it's more difficult to get the same type plate in GA whereas you need several 1000 commitments just to get the ball rolling instead of 300.

Don't forget to call Leanna at the ATC office in Asheville, you get a free membership if you're not already

Its kinda funny... the wife wants one but has not hiked the AT or any sections. I did propose to her on Springer, so she is linked to the AT in that way.

You get a free membership for having a NC AT plate?

BTW... a lot of characters aren't taken. I got LITE this fall and my buddy that hikes with a lot in his pack got HEVY. We will look funny parked at a trail head.

I am back, Sandy. The air sure is thick, and warm and humid, in Charlotte, compared to Breckenridge. Will be heading back out on the Trail very soon...

I have "COOP" on mine, but have moved to wv since and have it hanging on the grainery wall.

And ye shall know them by their plates. Gram consciousness would creep into my mind, and I'd quail at having to lug all four letters around on the car. Chances are I would have applied simply for SOB to save weight.

I was one of the original 300 to apply. It took over a year if I remember correctly. They sent me a letter that said they had held my $30 check for so long that my bank would not honor it and could I send another. (originally a $30 deposit was needed to guage interest in producing the plate.

I have 0158 and have seen several around Charlotte but none lower than mine. Thought about applying for HIKE or CAMP originally but figured they would have been taken for sure. Kicking myself everyday for that one!

I hope Tenn and VA will jump on board and offer plates as well.

Hey Nean, will you be in CO around mid June or in the east helping Squeaky? What about the hostel, where's that going to be?

I'll be helping Squeaky in mid June. The hostel will be at our house a few miles outside of Pagosa Springs...after I get back. I'll probably be able to get hikers into the springs for free too!:sun

Depending on conditions/snowpack I'll be hiking through either in June or September. Maybe I'll see you, maybe I won't! :D

My North Carolina AT license plate number is 0225. I just saw a report that the Carolina Mountain Club has been awarded a grant from license plate sales that will pay for bear cables (for hanging food out of bruin's reach) at all the NC shelters. Very timely, as the bears seem to have discovered the delights of raiding the shelters in this state.

I had the same problem. Once I got mine I was 243. I was already an ATC member when I got mine. We're fixing to get one for my husbands car.:)

Ya'll have probably seen the thread I started about the plate in Tennessee in this forum. Since I am in the group getting this project going, I get what I want so I plan on getting "2By"...my trail name. The other guy on the project with me plans on getting "2175" for obvious reasons.

Good luck with the Tennessee project. Maybe I'll get one for my mother for her birthday. No...that would be too cruel. (She doesn't like my hiking.)

I'm still lovin' my SOBO*AT North Carolina licence plate.

No. 498 here. It's always fun to spot another plate (especially one with a lower number.) You know instantly you've found a kindred spirit.

I think the ATC has 2175 in NC.

Marta,

Now that we know what your plate is don't be surprised if you hear someone honking frantically in Charlotte traffic at ya!

NC requires 4 numbers or letters. I'm not sure how TN will work.

Just ordered my NC AT plate this weekend. I've been wanting one for about a year but it wasn't until now that I could justify it. I had my eye on 'HYOH' as a personalized tag and it was available every time I checked.....until this time.

I racked my brain for about fifteen minutes and finally thought of one I liked that was available: 'BLAZ'
