What is the closest trailhead to the current exact center of the AT?...I know the milage changes all the time due to relocations etc (The trail is actually about 165 miles longer now than it was in the 70`s) but as of say tomorrow where would I most likely find a sign saying I`m at the center point?..Thanks

Closest road crossing to this year's true mid-point is probably PA. 233, near Toms Run Shelter, but there might not be a permanent sign there. As you probably know, the "real" mid-point of the Trail is different every year. There's a permanent sign, a big one, just North of Pine Grove Furnace Park (it once upon a time marked the mid-point) but it is not strictly accurate. It is, however, where thru-hikers have their "half-way" celebration, and this sign is much photographed.

Thanks I`ll go snoop around tomorrow for it as that`s hardly 90 minutes from my house....It`s suppose to be near 70 and sunny....Always wanted to see the field where "Pickets Charge" took place also and that`s not far off course

Have a good time at Gettysburg, it's an amazing place. At some point, pick up a copy of Michael Shaara's "The Killer Angles" which deals entirely with the battle; the whole end of the book involves Pickett's Charge. It is one of the finest historical novels I know of.

I love that book! I think what differentiates it from other civil war books is how you can feel a connection between both sides. Gods and Generals (Jeff Shaara) is a great read as well.

I hiked yesterday. There's a 2018 midpoint marker south of any mentioned. I hiked south from Woodrow Rd to Birch Run shelter, I think it's at 1093 -- ref below -- near Michener Cabin.
