Couple years ago I did Grayson/Mt Rogers, last year did Roan Highlands and in the early stages of 2007 planning, this seems to be what I'm leading to for around Memorial Day. I've about 5-7 days to do appx 100 miles. Looking forward to Big Bald and Max Patch.

I don't have my databook handy here in the office, but I think 100 miles south of Erwin will get you all the way to Davenport Gap. Which you probably already know, since you mention Max Patch.

I'm doing that same section over spring break -- can't wait. Once I get that done, I can do the Smokies, and then I'll have the first quarter of the trail completed. (Woohoo! It's only taken ten years so far. Hmm, that means I'm on the forty year plan.)

I did Sam's Gap > Erwin a few years ago, and Big Bald is awesome.
