$3000 is a good amount. Not including gear.

$20,000.00 including equipment.

Where are you staying? the Ritz Carlton? I guess you are planning on hiring a porter to carry all gear and also cook for you.

Come to think of it.. I don't have any idea how one could burn through 20 grand on an AT hike.

Anyone have any ideas how you could possibly spend 20 thou on a thru hike? this could be fun!!

Slack pack the whole way. That would burn through a wad of cash:)

... or get ripped off by the person you thought you could trust to pay your bills as you hike the AT. I include that in the cost of my hike.:(

I think 2 bucks a mile is a good estimate as long as you don't spend a lot of money on gear and hotels/motels along the way.

The more money you have, the more fun you will have.

Untrue. Do you really believe money buys happiness? A person who does work for stays and finds odd jobs along the way can have just as much, if not more fun, than the hiker with all the newest high tech gear and stays in the best hotels along the way. For the average hiker I'd say $5000 is more than enough to hike the trail and allows a little buffer in case of emergencies.

OMG! Lets go with $5000 per person for the hike and an additional $2000 if you bought everybody brand new gear. $7000 per person X 7 people, thats $49,000. How you managed to spend an additional $66,000 is beyond me.

Its your money. Spend it as you wish. With all that disposable income however, I'm curious as to how much of it you use to help others who are truly in need and not just "friends" who want to mooch off you during a through hike.

This is an impossible question to answer without knowing what your priorities are. I bought $100 bucks worth of new gear, and ate mostly generic rice, pasta, oatmeal and such on the trail. I stopped at most of the hostels on the way north but only stayed in motels/hotels two nights. I did eat well every five or six days, when I stopped in towns. And carried enough 100 proof booze to have 3 or 4 ounces most evenings.

I have no idea what the total came to for my six months and three days. I didn't keep a record. The biggest variable is food and motels. You can eat for 3 or 4 bucks a day, or 30-40 bucks a day. I figured on an average of six days between town stops, mostly because I wanted to maximize my time in the woods and mountains.

These days it seems most stop in towns every 2-3 days. Towns are money sinks.

Fonsie! Glad to see your starting to plan this trip!

Figure on about $5,000.00 with gear and a little "safety net", I ended up spending a good deal more then that due to hanging out in town and adopting the dog in Erwin.
You can do it for less but be carefull in town and plan things out so your not wasting time and money while hiking.

Have fun, hope to see you on some of our winter hikes this year.
