They must make em. Where can you get one, how much do they cost, and how much do they weigh? What's normal recharge time?

And I do realize that the weather can be real bad for significant stretches on the AT, but limiting battery wastage by keeping the phone off except when making calls, a person should be able to have some life in their phone until the sun pops back out.

why not just take a normal charger and hit town once a week or so?

Energizer makes cell chargers that run on 2AA I believe. You'd probably be better off with that.

Haven't tried a solar charger myself, but most say there isn't enough direct sunlight on most of the AT(aka green tunnel) to make them of much use. There is a very small hank crank charger available http://www.thetravelinsider.info/roadwarriorcontent/sidewinder.htm

The operating word here is SOLAR.

Too much cover in a lot of the trail areas to allow direct sun contact ...presuming that the sun is shining, which is no guarantee.

If you want to carry re-chargeables the most reliable method is a small charger. Every 4 - 6 days at most you are somewhere you can plug the charger in and top off your batteries.

I am thrilled with my Energizer AA Energitogo cell phone charger. $20 and comes with 2 lithium AA's. Great concept.
