I am looking for a good day pack. I want something that isn't too small to fit rain suit and pullover along with 3qt bladder, but not too big to bring a lot of extras. Oh yeah and not too expensive. Anyone got any suggestions. Just to give you an idea, I like the Northface Skareb 40 but for the price that is a bite.

if you're looking in the 2400 range, consider the golite jam. (i use it for mild-weather overnights.) it's been replaced by the jam2, so if you can find it, it's on sale.

if you can go smaller, check out

or one of the cottage people, such as ula.

I use a Lowe Alpine Contour 30 L. Its about 1800 ci and I can fit quite a bit of stuff in it. I plan on using it for light overnight trips this fall. It has a bladder pocket, as well as two exterior pockets and two water bottle pockets. STP has a 20 L (http://www.sierratradingpost.com/p/313,82825_Lowe-Alpine-Contour-Daypack-XC20-.html) (1200 ci) version of it for a decent price, although it may be a little small for your needs. I've never needed the full 30 L my pack offers though. I usually bring my rain jacket, a Primaloft pullover, gloves, extra food and water, and a survival and first aid kit on winter day hikes.

Just a quick suggestion: If you plan on doing more than on-trail hiking, than shy away from a silynylon type pack. My day pack (a generic one I bought many moons ago) is traditional ripstop nylon and is heavier than my actual backpack. I also use it for off-trail bushwhacking, dayhiking, canyoneering, winter sports, hauling books ,etc. Basically, I've beaten the crap out of it. A sil pack would have been destroyed by now.

If you are planning to stick with trails, then the silnylon type pack woud be fine.

If you are on a budget try these sites:

STP often has GoLite and Northface packs on clearence. REI outlet often has last year's models for sale.

If you are lucky, you may live near a used sportings good store that also has stuff for sale.

Good luck!

I have a Vaude Tour 40 that I bought from basegear.com. It is a very nice pack with an included rain cover. About 2400 c.i. with a hydration pocket, lot's of storage and handy storage pockets on the top and side. About $79 bucks with free shipping.

I use a Gregory Photon (great straps, excellent wide belt and outer water bottle holders and plenty of pockets etc) but not sure if its available or not now. I dont know what the cubic inches are but my 12 y/o boy uses it on overnighters. I am sure they have something equivalent.
