View Full Version : Best Low Priced 20F Sleeping Bag?
Ok, I need to spend as little as possible. I can spend up to $75. It seems that a 20 degree bag will work for a thru-hike. I'm looking for a very lightweight bag(obviously). Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
www.sierratradingpost.com (http://www.sierratradingpost.com) has some cheap. On the heavy side... here's one for $40. http://www.sierratradingpost.com/p/319,79391_Alps-Mountaineering-20-F-Sleeping-Bag-Alpine-Lake-.html

Campmor has a 20deg. Slumberjack bag for $39.99
BTW, I doubt you'll be able to find one "very lightweight" for $75 even used!

Yes, You are probably right and I don't expect to find anything extremely light but as light as possible. What would you guys consider too heavy for a thru hike?(for you personally)
Also, when it says pack weight does that just include the stuff sack? Because there seems to be a huge difference in wt and packed wt.

Are you talking about fill weight versus total weight? Fill weight is the insulation only, while total weight includes the stuffsack, shell, lining and zipper.
Yes that's what I'm talking about. Thanks.

Packed weight usually includes packaging materials, ie. the complete package as it is shipped to you. A stuff sack for a 20 degree bag shouldn't weigh more than, say, three or four oz., max.

You'll see a fair number of "Cat's Meow" bags on the AT in spring - a Northface bag. Synthetic, and cheap. Personally, I found mine on the cool side, but it was my first time out and I didn't understand how to layer up inside - and it hit low 20s. Many others do fine in it.
i love my cat's meow! it's about twice what you're looking to spend, though. i'd consider anything over 3 1/2 too heavy.

Coleman Exponent 20* Gray Fox, $59.95 @ Campmor on line.
I used one of these in 1990 for my thru, made by Peak 1 back then and used it for a complete 13 months nonstop. One of the most impressive pieces of equipment that I used back then. It lasted till 1997 w/o a problem and was still good down to 30* then. It was still usable when I threw it away. If I remember correctly it was 3lb. 2oz. and rating was very accurate.

You might check out this one. The North Face Aleutian, 20* synthetic bag. Weighs 3.25lbs. Slightly over your price but close.

Another question, I'm just a hair under 6 feet tall. Is a 6 ft bag going to be big enough for me?

I'd go for a 6'6. Whenever I fit people for bags at work who are close to 6 feet, I recommend going up. You might just barely fit a 6' bag, depending on the model, but you'll probably end up being damn cold if you don't have enough room in the bag.
Well, I just ordered the Coleman 20 degree that Jim Adams listed above. I hope it will hold up.
Changed my mind on the coleman and cancelled the order. I'm still open to ideas. Thanks again guys.

Slumberjack makes great cheap synthetic bags, but they won't be really light.

I think all they sell now is the Down 20 degree. Did they used to have a synthetic model? I've heard that down can be problematic if it gets wet etc, is that true?
