I plan on taking my time while walking the Trail and immerse myself in the culture, sights, sounds, people ect. What I'm looking to do is find as many blue grass music

festivals, jam sessions and shows to attend as possible. If you know of any and show dates could you share them, I'd be much obliged.

There are festivals around Albany and the Hudson valley each summer. Look up Falcon Ridge (http://www.falconridgefolk.com/) (7/26-7/29) and Old Songs (http://www.oldsongs.org/festival/) Festival (Altamont Fairgrounds, NY. 6/22-6/24). Winterhawk festival appears to be "on hiatus." The Arrogant Worms will be at Old Songs. Worth the trip right there. :)

www.merlefest.org/ (http://www.merlefest.org/)You will be hard pressed to find a bluegrass festival that would even come close to this within 50 miles of the AT. Legends to local acts. Well worth the admission price. More than just bluegrass as well.:sun

There's a jazz festival in DWG in mid-September every year. I happened to stumble into it on last fall's section hike. It's right on the trail. Literally. Check out the white blaze (http://www.terrapinphoto.com/cpg143/displayimage.php?album=6&pos=32) in the picture. I think that means it has to be free for any hiker passing through, eh?

Grey Fox is in July annually. It's in Ancramdale NY, just a few miles west of the AT where it crosses from CT into MA. See here: http://www.greyfoxbluegrass.com/general/home.php

In 2003 there was an outdoor BlueGrass concert on the campus of Dickinson College near Boiling Springs, PA around the middle of July. I think it is an annual event. We hit it perfectly. Had just hiked into town and were sitting on the front porch of the Regional ATC office. He asked if we were interested. We left our packs, hopped in the truck and drove out to the concert. It was a night to remember !!

The concert at Dickinson is an annual July event but I don't think the date has been set yet for 2007. Great school - my daughter's a graduate - and the food in their caf is superb!

Several years ago at Merlefest there was a guitar workshop and I got lessons from Jerry Douglas and Mike Auldridge. Many other well known pickers were there, all incredibly nice people generous with their time, and tolerant of all of us geeks. It is always a great event.

It's not exactly next door to the trail but the Lowell Folk Festival (http://www.lowellfolkfestival.org/) is free and a really good time. It'll be 7/27-7/29/07, in Lowell MA. (North of Boston, near NH border.)

No offense to anyone involved but the hostel in Bastian was f c kd up when I was there 16.5 yrs ago. It was vile, in fact. The music was good though.

Another point to bear in mind, though I'm sure you're aware of this, is that many of the major acts tour from one festival to another, so for instance if you get to Gettysburg, you'll be seeing somewhat of a repeat at Grey Fox. It's nice to see the big names, but personally I'd be more inclined to try to visit small, local jams as much as possible.

They don't have much posted now, so check back periodically.

Here in Hiawassee there is also the Georgia Mountain Music Every Friday and Sat....we did not see a jam....it was more like a family show.

But you don't want to miss:

http://www.clayscorner.com/friday.shtml

We had fun at the possum drop two years ago and I enjoyed the jammin in the corner the but the beauty contest was the best. Don't let me video music scare you....

The Folk school is great....we go as much as we possibly can:

We really like this guy and hope to get him here for our St Paddys' Party

Carter Family Fold: Every Saturday night (north of Erwin/Johnson City/
Kingsport, outside of Hiltons, VA). Unplugged, clogging,
home of Carter family: AP, Sarah, Mother Maybelle, June
etc. Down home. The best.

Miss Janet used to take hikers to a bluegrass barn outside of Erwin. May still
be in business.

Levi Long's son is the dobro player for Seldom Scene. Alot of talent in that family. I have jammed with the sunday evening pickers on the corner near Levi`s place, there is some really fine musicians in that neck of the woods for sure. Never stayed at the hostel before it was closed so cant comment on that but I didnt hear much bad about it over the years.

-In Gatlinburg last year there was a band that played every night in a courtyard surrounded by shops. They were pretty good.

- In Erwin, it's kinda spotty/impromptu but they often have bluegrass jams at the campground down by the river on the weekends spring-fall.
