i'm guessing the orange one won the fight??? the other one was not moving - it must have been dead for quite a while, but it seems that the orange one forgot to loosen it's grip on the poor thing's head.
Very cool. Could it be this guy?

SPRING SALAMANDER
Gyrinophilus porphyriticus
Family: Plethodontidae
A large (11-21 cm), stout-bodied salamander, the body color ranges from salmon to pinkish-orange with small dark spots or flecks. A light line extends from the eye along a raised ridge to the snout and may be shadowed by a faint gray to black line beneath it. These salamanders are very predatory and often feed upon other salamanders, even their own kind; they also feed upon many invertebrates. Spring salamanders prefer seeps, springs, fish-less headwaters, caves and cave streams. They are found primarily in the eastern half of the state, although there has been one reported from West Tennessee.

Yep. Orange one is a Spring, the black one is a slimy salamander.

thanks for your replies
i didn't think it was cannabilism. if it was, i'd say it bit off more than it could chew
Another great WhiteBlaze.net thread from one of my favorite forums! I see some of my favorite posters were here checking it out too.:)

Cannibalism? Happens all the time in the animal world. There sure are some tasty specimens out there I'd like to take a bite of. :D

What we're looking at is some crazy salamander love. Biracial crazy salamander love. They were probably too exhausted to move.
