What's maps or software would you recommend that describe both parking and side trails on the AT? We are doing some training hikes and this info would be very helpful since we are not familiar with the AT very much.

My best advice is do a online search on side trails of the Appalachian Trail. I found most states with online guides.

The standard maps available from the ATC in most cases contain info on side trails; for more or better information, you might want to contact the individual Trail clubs for advice on maps of areas adjacent to the Trails. these are, after all, the guys who need to access the Trail from all over the place so they can do Trail work and maintenance, so they are absolutely your best resource for finding out about side trails, access trails, and other trails, roads, etc. close to the actual AT.
