Biingo! JCazz is correct.

JFK and hkers at Shaws both rest under world-famous black Monson Slate. At Shaw's the roof shingles are made of the material, as is JFK's marker at Arlington National Cemetery.

Nope. The answer is tied to the history of Monson. A bit obscure.

Monson slate is considered to be a fine quality because of the black color.

It was used as the memorial stone for President John F. Kennedy and his two children. In August of 1994 the headstone was made of Monson slate for Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis.

How many vertical feet does one climb on a thru hike from Springer to Big K?

Approximately 475,000 feet. Best estimates I've heard are a sum of 90 miles in posiitive elevation changes.

I heard it's the equivalent of 15 or 16 ascents of Mt. Everest (from sea level.) I think the average vertical is about 3000 feet per day. I forget where the stats came from.
