What is the best/lightest tarp shelter for under 150?

Brian at OES makes great tarps. Very high quality and great customer service. Should fit your budget too.

I second the OES tarp. He is really good about answering questions and will custom make a tarp for you.

I have a McCat Deluxe and am very happy with it.

8x10, $25 at Home Depot. Or free from a construction site. pitches nicely with or without trekking poles: take a small rock and wrap a corner around it to make a "ghost." You can then tie cord around the neck of the ghost (thereby trapping the rock inside the tyvek) and stake it out. Or, you can wrap yourself up like a burrito.

It weighs approximately .19 ounces per square foot. Heavier than $200 tarps, but just as effective in my opinion. You can get 20-30 uses out of it, at least.

Myst is still selling it.

If you stick to square dimensions, it is easier and more versatile to set-up.

Geek -- maybe you should put up a web page with tarp instructions and photos. I'm serious. It sounds like you know what you're doing.

Terrapin Too,
Thanks for the faith. I have been using a tarp almost exclusively for the past 16 years and love the space it gives me and I have been through some pretty nasty weather.
I would very much like to help anyone that I can with a tarp BUT although I can keep myself alive outside, I can't fair so well inside!:banana
You see, getting onto these forums is about the most computer literate that I am. I wouldn't even know where or how to start.
I would be very happy to help anyone interested in doing so!

Geek: If you have photos (JPGs) and some text, I can turn them into a web page and host them on my site (for example.) Maybe Mags or some other "hiking god" would like to host it for you. In any case, given JPGs and some vaguely organized text, I can turn it into HTML....

Keep it in mind. I will be using my tarps over the next few weeks if possible and I'll shoot some photos on my digital and write some explainations.:-?

Look at ID Silshelter, but costs 10$ more, at 160$:

I know of one who has used it thruhiking the AT some years ago. It works well.

8 x 10 silnylon tarp. I've used one from Equinox in the past. It's the cheapest you can find at around $60. Limited tie outs though and the grommets really put stress on the material.

I just purchased an 8 x 10 silnylon tarp from Oware. Lots of tie out options and they use webbing loops instead of grommets. Stitching appears to be high quality. It weighs 13oz. Haven't had any field use yet but it will be coming with me on my thru.
