Phew, I hope I typed that right. Now this little baby is a joy to hump and provides good reception on the ridges and about everywhere else. I bought 3 of them over the phone but you'll want to probably get a different headset. They use 2 AAA batteries and have 10 AM/FM programable memory, etc. I don't know if you can get them over the website I provided.

Sangean DT-180V (http://www.ccrane.com/radios/pocket-radios/sangean-dt180v-pocket-radio.aspx). AM, FM, TV Ch 2-13. No weather. Headphones only.

I don't use it outdoors, just as my "go to sleep" radio. It has good sensitivity and selectivity, AM & FM. Haven't listened to TV much. Single AAA battery. Very solid construction, probably a little heavier than similar radios. 5 presets, AM & FM. No lighted display, but controls are simple and intuitive, and pass the "total darkness test."

This is the only pocket radio I've used. I've read some reviews of other models, and there seems to be a lot of complaints about poor AM sensitivity. I'd consider that, unless you just want to listen to local AM stations.

Check out the Sony SRF-M97

Great little AM/FM radio that runs on a single AAA battery. I carried a different on during my 2003 thru but it's no longer available. Bought this one last year after a lengthy search.

Small package, great sound !! Has a clip that attaches to my sternum strap.

If there is a Radio Shack near you pay them a visit. They have 2 stores near me, and an amazing assortment of radios. I got a solar powered one the same size as a credit card, about 1/8 inch thick and glued it to the top of my hat. It came with little foam earbuds that have really good sound. After 5 or 6 hours of sun it will play for about 4 days. It will also recharge from the light of a regular light bulb.

i've definitely always heard digital tuners get better reception than analog. I had an analog one untl Virginia and didn't get all that much. you like country music, right? that's about all I got.

I bought a Sony SFR-M37V for my thru. AM, FM, VHF TV, & weather bands, quite weather resistant, uses single AAA battery. $34.97 at Amazon. Got mine for about the same at Circuit City. I've used it for several shakedown hikes. Great little radio. Battery lasts a long time.

Im looking for a small radio to take with me on my thru. I dont need Mp3 or cd type radios just a small "dont even know its there" kind maybe takes a AAA or AA battery or 2. any suggestions?

Hmmm ...so, feature for feature it sounds like 2 front runners are:

SONY SR-FM37V

http://www.amazon.com/Sony-SFR-M37V-Weather-Walkman-Presets/dp/B00008W7LS

SONY SRF-M85V

http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=3649973#Specifications

Essentiall the same price but the M85V looks to me as if it might be a bit more weather worthy.

For what it's worth ...I did some reading on both of the SONY models I listed in my previous post. The user reviews on the SONY SRF-M85V are POOR however the user reviews on the SONY SR-FM37V are mostly POSITIVE.

I had a little sony that picked up AM-FM-TV-WEATHER.

I maded sure my headlamp and radio took same battery type so spares could be used interchangably--both use AAA. This keeps weight down and also if your lose the spares you can take the batteries from one to the other temporarily throughout the day.

========================================

You remember the model # ?? ...and how was the reception. Biggest complaint I've read so far is that the reception with these little devices leaves a lot to be desired, even in/around big cities.

I've got the Sony SR-FM37V, and like it.

Target carries them in stock, way cheaper than Amazon.

What I like:

1. The radio has easy-to-use buttons.
2. There's a "hold" slide switch that locks out the buttons so if they're accidentally pressed, nothing happens - the volume control still works. The "hold" switch works well, easy to use.
3. Plenty of bass in the headset.
4. Decent but not great reception.

What I don't like:
1. The 3.3 ounces doesn't include the large headset. Together they weigh something like 5.5 ounces or more.
2. The headset is too big for my little head. Maybe it's like clothing these days, greatly oversized. The pictures do not show it in anything like its true proportion to the radio.
3. The headset has lots of bass. But there's no bass/treble control on the radio.
4. It's not waterproof - can't imagine making things these days that's not waterproof, but they do, and fools like me buy 'em.
