My Mountainsmith Ghost is 3100 cubic inches. I haven't done a thru hike yet, but pack size is pretty much irrelevant. There are people who thru-hike with 2500 cu in frameless "daypacks" and people that go on dayhikes with 5500 cu in keltys. It really doesn't matter. It's what works for you that counts.

I carried my 3800cu in granite gear pack for a month on the AT last year, and have used it for an 8 day hike in the Grand Canyon. We carried tarps instead of tents so otherwise there may have been a space issue.

I carry a 5400 cubic inch pack for uninterrupted winter trips. It'll haul enough to stay out for 18 to 21 days(with the tent and the thermy strapped to the outside).

I have a Dana Design Bomb Pack and it is about 3200ci and it will do just about anything. I also have a REI UL 45 that I run with, but I havn't taken it into the backcountry yet.
