Not just a giant for the PCT and California trails; we owe him a lot for the entire National Trails System (including the AT) as well.

This was the guy Ray Jardine once wrote a paraniod letter to me about how this guy controlled the PCTA and was basiclly the force that allowed those dreaded horses on the trail.:eek::D

Yes, I suppose he is. On the other hand, it's thanks to him that the PCT is a fully graded trail, with slopes that are relatively gentle so that horses can handle them, which makes it less of a torture and more of a hike. Although the true masochists among us may think that extra pain is worth it. But those are welcome to hike from the Border through the desert without extra water, if they really want to suffer.

Not starting a debate here...but who was really first???
The horses/mules pack trains or the thru-hikers?

Since the PCT was only completed 19 yrs ago! (or was it truly just 10 yrs ago fully completed?)
oh dear... now I have done it:p

Any how always sad when someone passes who helped preserve our wonderful wilderness areas for everyone to enjoy.

okay I stand corrected....it was 13 years ago it was truly completed
