Has anyone tried one of these? I know they are new. Great features at $99.

How much weight do you think you could carry comfortably in that thing?

I just ordered one yeserday to replace my very tired old Jam. I agree the waterproof zip is illogical, but otherwise it looks like some well implemented changes. The most obvious is that the delta wings on the hipbelt are much wider and extend farther around the waist. I also noticed the webbing on top of the shoulder strap padding is wider at the top, probably so it compresses the padding less at the shoulder. I could carry up to about 25 in my old Jam before it really started to suck. I think these changes alone could actually make 30 pound loads reasonably comfortable, although I never carry that much except with a heavy water load.

Other than that it's pretty much the same pack. The side compression straps have buckles now, thinner webbing for the axe loops. I don't really know what the "compacktor" system does. All the compression features look the same as the old Jam. I guess I'll find out.

Andrew Skurka talked a bit about it on the backpackinglight forums, you could probably find out more there.

Here's a thread (http://www.backpackinglight.com/cgi-bin/backpackinglight/xdpy/forum_thread/5850/index.html) over at BPL about the Jam2 with some great pics.

It's crazy how tall those things get. I went ahead and ordered a smd starlite today. But I've read lots of good things about the jam 2 as well in my research.

Well, I got an email saying that they ran out of the closeout starlite packs. Now I'm back to square one.
