I've always heard of WhiteBlaze.net, but I've never taken the time to poke around it. Today I investigated, and it was an amazing coincidence that someone posted my 10 year plan just 2 days ago!

My ten year (http://francistapon.com/ten.htm) plan is pretty ambitious and I might not do it all, although so far I've been on track. Planning is important, although so is spontaneity.

I talk about planning in my book. When we learn from trail lore before embarking on a major project (like thru-hiking the AT), we minimize the errors that we can make. Of course, we'll still make mistakes, but we will make fewer and we'll have more fun as a result. :)

This forum is awesome because it lets people learn from others.

The key step that some forget is that you should create trail lore. In other words, don't spend all your time on the Net researching your trips. At some point you can overplan. Although most don't overplan, some do and they end up missing opportunities because they're constantly afraid.

Happy trails,
