Several people have expressed concern about the possibility of Redford and Newman making a "Walk in the Woods" movie and thereby creating so much interest in the Trail that it will become severely overcrowded. Well, why not fight fire with fire? We should make a horror movie about the AT that is so scary that no one who isn't already a serious hiker will ever think about venturing into the woods again. :D With that in mind, I'm going to post a series of polls on what you think various aspects of the movie should be like. This post will concern the title. While I will put up some possibilities that I've come up with, other suggestions are always welcome. Disclaimer: Any resemblance to real hikers, types (or stereotypes) of hikers, hiking situations, pet peeves of hikers, or trailtowns, living or dead, is. . .uhhhh. . .not entirely coincidental. ;)

Well Deliverance comes to mind, LOL (part of was filmed near the trail) Then theres the real stuff like the Slaughter Gap tale, then theres the killing at Vandeventer shelter and Wapiti and,,,,,so many real tragedies along the trail that could be used, (no disrespect intended to the victims and their families etc) now that's reality horror right there ;) Can then say: "Based on a true story" lol Oh I could write a scary one for sure.

RAT <--watches ALOT of horror flicks

I went with Trail of Blood, but I Know Where You Stealth Camped Last Summer is pretty funny.

Well Im the only one to vote for Zero Day Part VIII: Trailtown's Revenge ...Because think about maybe theres a person living in a town that is a killer and dos'nt like hikers. Then they sell the gear on E-Bay......gets you thinking.

if catz is as fat as bryson says, then they could do a revival of sorts or an older show...Jake and the fat man (episode - Three blind mice...maybe, but not innocent)

Thread about the wapiti murder here (there is abook out about it)

I am still looking for the Vandeventer one, it was in the 70`s so may not be able to find anything. According to records there have been somewhere between 7 and 9 murders along the trail since 1970 , oddly enough mostly couples. The numbers vary because some of the murders took place off the trail but the victims were previously hiking on it. I will post any other details I can find. I had a friend who seen the police pictures of the Vandeventer one, very gruesome and too sexually graphic and gory to post here.

Found something: http://www.southcoasttoday.com/daily/06-96/06-05-96/a08wn038.htm by Associated press writer David Reed:

Murder usually comes in pairs along the Appalachian Trail. Nine people have been killed on or near the trail since 1974, and all but three have been multiple slayings, according to the Appalachian Trail Conference in Harpers Ferry, W.Va., which maintains and manages the trail.
http://www.southcoasttoday.com/daily/06-96/06-05-96/tab.gif"In three of those cases, they were double murders: six incidents, nine murders," said Brian King, a spokesman for the organization. About 4 million people visit or hike on the trail each year, Mr. King said.

In 1988, a man frightened two women off the trail and shot them in Michaux State Forest in south-central Pennsylvania. One woman survived and the other died. Stephen Roy Carr was sentenced to life in prison without parole in the shootings.
http://www.southcoasttoday.com/daily/06-96/06-05-96/tab.gifTwo years later, hikers were warned to stay off the trail in Pennsylvania after a man and his fiancee were shot to death as they slept in a remote shelter along the trail in Perry County, Pa. Paul David Crews of LaRue, S.C., is awaiting execution in Pennsylvania for those two slayings.

In May 1981, a man and a woman from Ellsworth, Maine, who were hiking from Georgia to Maine, were killed in a remote cabin near Pearisburg, Va. Randall Lee Smith, who pleaded guilty to lesser charges in the deaths, is up for parole in Virginia in September.
http://www.southcoasttoday.com/daily/06-96/06-05-96/tab.gifA Wisconsin woman was hacked to death by a hiker with a hatchet in Tennessee in April 1975; her attacker died in prison. A 26-year-old man was killed at a shelter in Georgia in May 1974.
http://www.southcoasttoday.com/daily/06-96/06-05-96/tab.gifIn 1990, hikers were warned not to venture off a 14-mile stretch of the trail in Tennessee after booby traps were set and suspicious fires were started along the trail.

The 1981 and 1975 ones were the wapiti and vandeventer I mentioned.

Well, why not fight fire with fire? We should make a horror movie about the AT that is so scary that no one who isn't already a serious hiker will ever think about venturing into the woods again. Why not capture the sounds and smells of a shelter at night... pick one far from any hostel or town. That should frighten off all but the really serious.... and the criminally deranged :D
