Hey there, my name is Sam and I'll be out there mid-march for a thru-hike. it'll be my first, but i'm no stranger to hiking - not that i'm an expert, just former-Marine. One adventure leads to another, and now that I'm out I can't stand bewing one of those worker-bee types. i can't wait for this, and i definitley can't wait to meet all you lovely people out on the trail.

IllustratedMan--was the name inspired by Ray Bradbury's book? I love that one.

thanks for all the welcomes and well-wishes. this is going to be one hell of a time. i'd like to do this with the least possible gear, not because i like to pack light - i just don't like having things to worry about. can anybody post a list of the bare essentials needed for such a hike - things i might overlook?

You don't need to carry everything, but it should get you started.

See you on the trail,

I hung up my combat boots in 1996 and picked up my hiking boots.
The Alice pack was replaced by a "real" backpack...no flak jacket, no brain bucket and instead of shooting with guns I started shooting with cameras.
Semper Fi and enjoy your hike.

Welcome to Whiteblaze. The gear list is really a personal thing.. I suggest that you post what you are planning to take and have others do a "virtual shakedown" I did this and it really helped in 05.
