If he doesn't reply, PM Jack he post here a lot.

I would check out trailjournals.com . A lot of people post online journals of their trip there. If they fallow through with their journal, they can be searched by completed or incompleted hikes. It would be a small subset of thru hikers, but you could use it to draw conclusions about thru hikers as a whole.

Estimates range from 10% to about 20-25% completion, if memory serves. Something like 25% drop out in the first couple of weeks.

ATC website has that info going back a few years. I think it's under "thru-hike information" or something like that. They say around 25% complete, which (i think) only includes those that sent in their 2,000 miler form. But I think they'd still be the most reliable source.

Geez those are some scary stats..It appears lots of people drop out after 30 miles and most years half drop out by 160 miles???...I`m curious as to how many of these folks have any long distance hiking experience before attempting a thru-hike

I would say most have NO long distance hiking experience.

I recently read that some first time AT'ers have dropped out after hiking the Amicalola approach trail b/c it was too much for them to handle!

No, the ATC freely admits that their figures are at best an educated guess. Many thrus never have no contavt with the ATC or any other group for that matter.
