What are the best type scales to use for weighing all your gear?:-? Open season on input!!! I'm new to this weight conscience version of backpacking. Thanks.

I have a postal scale from ebay. I am not sure as to its accuracy, but I weigh all my gear on it. So if it is off it is off on all my gear. Since I use it to compair things, that doesn't matter as much.
What are the best type scales to use for weighing all your gear?:-? .

I just bought a set of scales from Ebay for about 20.00 shipped from this seller (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=006&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWN%3AIT&viewitem=&item=160082758745&rd=1&rd=1). 35 pound capacity with .1oz / 5 gram accuracy, has a HOLD function that stores the weight of an item on the display after the item has been removed, and runs on A/C or 9v battery.

Depends on how accurate you want to be.
You can get a digital fishing scale (hanging) accurate to 2/10ths of a lb. for about 30 bucks. If you are a fisherman that's a plus.
If you are OK with half lb. increments you can get one for as little as 14 bucks. (non-digital)

I'm not a big ounce counter, and I'm kinda cheap:p, so I've always used a regular digital weight scale. Step on scale, measure your weight. Step on scale again holding piece of gear, subtract the difference. Sounds cheesy, but it works. I choppped 8 lbs. from my pack weight doing this, and didn't have to buy something else to clutter my closet with.:D
Scary thing is two nalgenes will register using this method.:eek: Scale's only accurate to 1/2 lb too.

You can buy digital food scales in the small appliance department of Walmart, Target, etc. The going price is about $30. Also, there's the cheap option of hauling you gear to the post office and weighing for free.

Got a set off Ebay as well for $17.95 up to 36 lbs.

You max em out with one empty nalgene.:) Jus won't do.
Scary thing is two nalgenes will register using this method.:eek: Scale's only accurate to 1/2 lb too.
In my journey into "lightweight" backpacking I often do a mental calculation of dollars per ounce saved. In those terms, ditching the Nalgenes was the deal of the century. ;)
