If I'm not mistaken (does happen) only three women have hiked the AT 3 times. Mrs Gorp, Rambunny and another old timer. As far as I know Blister, although a triple crowner has only hiked the AT once.

There are others that have hiked lots of miles on the AT and different trails, Spiritwalker, Yogi, Marmot, Marsha, et al. (all triple crowners)

The strongest woman hiker I've ever seen was Yahoola in '97. She made it from Hot Springs to Damascus in around 8 days, which is like doing 8 back-to-back 25 mile days.

In addition to the folks already mentioned, like Mrs. Gorp, Blister, Rambunny, Laurie Adkins, Yogi, I'd add Teatree to the list as well. Twilight in '98 was another really strong hiker. Any or all of these women can hike rings around old hosses like me, and they probably could've done it when I was ten years younger, too.

In fact, most of them did just that.

In 2000 I hiked many miles with Blister. She hiked hard, drank hard, and raised Hell with the best of them. All of us there came to love and admire her and her style. We admired her so much we gave her the "seconday" trail name "Baltimore Jackie O". Too bad it didn't stick but Blister Bitching Sister is also a name that works for her. Mrs Gorp is also a great hiker and good friend but forget a female Baltimore Jack. When they made Jack they threw away the mold and there will never be another one, male or female.

I LOVED the name "Baltimore Jackie O." Don't know, though, that they threw away the mold. I've seen Jack's gear. There's mold everywhere.

Based on my knowledge, Wanda Kurdziel, is the most prolific female long distance hiker. Up to 1998, she had walked the AT four times, the LT four times, the CDT, the PCT, the JMT, the Colorado Trail, the FT, the Wonderland Trail twice, the Bartram Trail, and several other long distance trails.
She stands out on her own and is definitely no 'Baltimore Jane' in regards to backpacking mileage, internet posting, and personal habits.

The thing is their improvisational technique went over a lot of heads, so to speak, and since there's 100 times the recorded material out there than for bands who only put out their best attempts on albums, some of it's bound to be unssuccessful. When the jam factor kicks in and they take wing I've never heard anything that is as complex, technically proficient or musically uplifting. Many people don't have the time or the headspace to listen long and hard enough to get the rewards. "You don't have time to call your soul a critic, no..."

I knew Greg and Duane a long, long time ago when they were the Allmon Joys. Both were partying wide open then, but Duane would always quit before he got totally wasted - not so of Greg. Greg has settled down considerably over the years. He got clean and sober in the mid-1990's and Stacey (his wife since about 2000) has been really good for him.

I assume the reference to the 16 yo is Shannon Wilsey (later a porn star under the name Savannah who took her own life in the mid-1990s). If so, it is my understanding that she was the person responsible for introducing Greg Allman to heroin - not the other way around.

More about Dorothy and Wanda. I've heard little about Wanda, none of Dorothy.
BTW, in 1990 there was a female hiker from Switzerland, can't remember her name. Anyway, she hiked tha Alps constantly and decided to try the A.T. I could hold my own back then doing 3 1/2 to 4 mph on a good day. She caught me at Kent Ct. and we had supper together in one of the restaurants there. The next day I hiked with her all day and decided that was enough---too much work. God was she fast. Anyone remember her?

I want to say her trail name was 'Monkey' but I'm not 100% on that. I'm not sure exactly how many miles shes put in but it seemed like she'd hiked everywhere I mentioned- the PCT, Glacier, Denali, Grand Canyon, Utah, the Rockies, the Haute Route, Patagonia, the Himalayas, New Zealand...If I mentioned it and she had hiked there. Maybe I'm being generous with her age. Guess she could've been in her 50's. She was carrying and old external frame pack, which I found amazing looking at her other gear.

Could be the same woman, she didn't look 42 in 1990! Her pack was external and if I remember correctly, it was o.d. green. :-?
Does anyone else know this woman?

She was smallish, and in great shape. She had curly brown hair. Can't be sure how fast she was hiking as she rolled into the shelter after we were set up and left before we did in the morning so we never got to hike together. I think she said she was putting in 10-15 mile days...I got the impression that this was her first time on the AT and I know she mentioned she hadn't thruhiked it before, so its probably not the same gal. She left an impression with all of her fantastic stories, though. She had been to almost every place I expressed interest in visiting. The kicker came when I mentioned that I would be paddling in the Everglades in late winter and she excitedly says, "Oh yes, I will be there too in February! I have good friends that work for the park service in Florida. Maybe I will see you there!" I couldn't believe it.

I'm sure I saw far more Dead shows than you saw Flink Poyd shows.:bse...I only saw two Floyd shows, and both of them were sublime. I saw at least fifty Dead shows and maybe only a third of them came close, but a few of them were beyond anything else I've ever seen.

Jimi Hendrix would be hard to beat for technical excellence on guitar.

As for the Dead - when they were good, they were very good - but they weren't consistently good. Going to one of their concerts was a crap-shoot.
