I passed a kidney stone the other day that measured 1/4" by 1/8" the other day. For those of you who have had the pleasure you know that the little brick was talking loud. I was wondering if any guys had the misfortune of passing a stone on the AT?

For those of you that are HSV2 bearers you know how physical stress often results on an outbreak. I wonder how the stress of every day long distance hiking affects occurrance rates. It would be awful to be hiking in that condition day after day. Of course this is not a male only problem, just thought it might spice up this thread:eek:

"You will find something more in woods than in books. Trees and stones will teach you that which you can never learn from masters."
~Saint Bernard (1090 - 1153)

LOL, yes...some trees and stones have to be experiences to be appreciated. It's not a rare event in the population though and it would seem that somebody had that misfortune while hiking the AT since Dehydration is a big contributor to forming a kidney stone. I've had two other events and each followed long hikes on remote trails that lacked water. I don't know what brought this one on.

=============================================

...and then some. Didn't keep count but it was well over a dozen. Got home and had 2 surgeries to get rid of the buggers. In my case the stone was really large (about 2 - 3 cm diameter) and somewhat trapped deep in the kidney. Chips were breaking off, irritating the ureteral lining and ocassionally clogging up the plumbing.

Yeah, Footslogger...that's what I'm talking about. I'm thinking you earned a fast pass right into heaven when you die. If you haven't had one it's hard to describe the pain. To have one and keep a hike going is beyond impressive. I am in awe of some of the things that people have endured to finish their thru hike.

My dad had a huge kidney stone. I remember seeing the Xrays of it. Anyway, he used a home remedy to fix it: Beer, lots of it. He'd empty 4 cans of beer with each meal and presto, the stone pissed itself away.

I'm now a believer in the healing properties of beer.

===================================

Works if the stone/fragment is small. With the larger stones/fragments there is sometimes complete obstruction of the ureter (tube from kidney to bladder). In that case the plumbing backs up and all the beer (or any fluid for that matter) doesn't help.

I've had em both ways ...neither way was fun !!

Have a warmer sleeping bag?

Have a stove that can boil a liter of water 0.2 seconds faster than your stove?

We are looking for those deep seated troubling, ego busting, issues that we men face.

Does anyone have an issue with the hair on the tops of your feet itching if your wear the same pair of hiking socks too long. Almost like the hair is growing into the sock.

Have you ever thought of shaving your feet?

How about the same issue with back hair when you wear a synthetic t-shirt too long.

Do you shave you back or have your ever considered it?

Has anyone had laser hair removal? I am talking metro-sexual here.

As a man would you admit it on an "all male" site like this thread?

Used to wax the hair on the top of my feet then one day it hit me...if I let it grow into a little gotee, it will stop friction in my hiking boots. Seemed to work OK until I thought about growing it into a full foot beard!!!! That's when the idea hit me and I came out with the new product....SMARTHAIR SOCKS.... incredible warm, decent wicking and cheap. I'm attempting to do a big A.T. release on Springer for early April but I can't seem to get enough foot hair yet. My R&D department should have the problem solved in time as soon as the 350 Russian mailorder brides arrive!
