After some thinking it seems like this type of hat would be the best for shade/rain protection in the summer. A regular baseball cap doesnt protect the top of your ears. So whats a good bucket type hat?

I love the Tilley hat http://www.tilley.com/detail.asp?catId=1&gender=u&extractBy=CategoryId&id=1&productNo=T3
Gives great shade and the dual colors help with glare, etc. Also can't beat the warranty. Only down side is the price, Tilley's website has them for ~$75. I'm sure they are cheaper elsewhere.

I wore an REI version of the Marmot (campmor site) on post #2, for a few weeks in Alaska and swore I would never go anywhere without it again.
I have this hat and I love it:...
Looks like a copy of the famous Outdoor Research Seattle Sombrero (http://www.orgear.com/home/category/home/headware/rain_hats). I still have mine from my circa 1990, and never hike without it. I'd be heartbroken if I ever lost it.
beat up western style straw hat for me

my thoughts exactly. light and breathable....not to mention suave and stylish! :p
Your trail name would be Buckethead.
I use an OR Elemental Bucket hat which is designed as a lightweight sun/rain hat. It weights 2.1oz, dries fast. It works in normal rain. Never tried it in monsoon conditions. I suspect a Seattle Sombrero would be required for that sort of rain.

A great dollar store find. While not a great sun hat, its the perfect rain hat. I just can't hike with the wife when I wear it. Since it only costs a dollar you might be able to experiment with it and paint it darker for sun.
