Has this been done before? It would be great to randomly come across people and you have somethin to talk about except "hey im goin to sleep."

what about a whiteblaze.net patch that you could sew onto your pack or something?

Click on About Whiteblaze/Tools on the main page, then patches. They are $3.50 each. Hope this helps.

A simple, "Hi, I'm Marta," usually gets the reaction "From Whiteblaze?" from other people on Whiteblaze.

So I suggest trying out a greeting of "Hi, I'm blackmath."

I would try that but blackmath wont be my trail name. Not sure what my trail name is going to be yet. So that would get confusing.

You can also casually work into the conversation..."I read on Whiteblaze..."

It's similar to mentioning the word "husband" in the first couple of sentences when talking to men who seem interested to see an unattached woman wandering around...

Marta/Five-Leafed Clover

PS--"Marta" is not my trail name, but it does have the virtue of being my real name, so I use it often when introducing myself. ;-) People from Atlanta are confused by it, but even they can get used to it after a while. I had my name before MARTA had its.

:-? Uhm, you all do know that the White Ribbon has other connotations?

Like http://www.wctu.org/index.html - the WCTU
Or http://www.whiteribbon.ca/ - men working to stop men's violence on women
Or http://www.whiteribbonday.org.au/ - UN's day to eliminate violence on women
Or http://www.whiteribbonalliance.org/ - for safe pregnancy
Or http://www.whiteribbon.org/ - dialogue on immigration
Or http://w-ribbon.tripod.com/ - awareness of gay-teen suicide

So how is the WhiteBlaze/WhiteRibbon different from those?

I thought about that too. I remember back in Catholic school the white ribbon was against porn. I figure most people on the trail aren't walking to rally against porn so if they see my ribbon and they read on WB then they'll get it.

A subtle splash of white zinc oxide on your nose might be a unique identifier and also functional for SOBOS.

You may be mistaken for Uruk-Hai (http://arwen133.free.fr/lotrma/caps/uruk-hai.GIF)...or worse, a lifeguard.

made out of plastic, maybe 1"x3" or 0.5" x 1.5" and attached to the shoulder strap.....attached maybe like lapel pins, you know the push pin thing with the round clip on the back....FishingFred could surely whip these up for us.
Also maybe in the middle of the whiteblaze 'WB' in green.
Should be cheap but I dont know the costs of things like this...you could put one on the shoulder strap and one on the backpack...Mowgli could stick on into his forehead (just kidding Little Bear).....hey, maybe FF could make one with a light inside and a small battery compartment.

I thing Fishing Fred should make Official Whiteblaze Dancing Banana Bobbleheads. He'd make a fortune.

:banana :banana :banana

Maybe I should get a patent on it first.

And the flashlight could have an EXTRA-high setting. Just flip it on, stick it in a pot of water and it'll be boiling before you can say "JetBoil".

The WB banana bobblehead flashlight cooker... :-?
it has promise.:banana

So I suggest trying out a greeting of "Hi, I'm blackmath."

That works unless you tend to act like an idiot here.

"What's your trailname?"

"Nightwalker."

"From Whiteblaze?"

"Yup."

"Well, be seeing ya."

That actually happened to me once in '05 or '06. T'was weird sho' 'nuff.

Followed by a not-so-secret use of Purell.

True WBers are making donations and wearing the WB Shirts....no need for ribbons....also just introduce yourself as a WBer... others will respond appropriately... with the secret hand shake...;)
