Mrs E-Z and I will be visiting the wilds of LV for a week. Hopefully I don't lose my hiking shirt! ;)I thru-hiked The Strip SOBO last year. The most difficult area was between E Desert Inn Rd and Sands Avenue, which includes the notorious 100 yard wilderness in front of the Fashion Mall. You can resupply at the Wynn if you have to, but be aware that the shelter just south of the Mall is a Mirage.

Be very careful where you try to refill your water bottle. One hiker walked up to what he thought was a calm pool beside a casino. The lights and clasical music came on as he dipped his bottle, suddenly a 200 foot tall fountain came on, lifted him into the air and he was never seen again. Also, expect almost no trail magic from the slot machines.

I've got a system.
I put money down. They pick money up. Fly out on a plane. Come home on the bus.

Works every time.

In all seriousness related to hiking... Are you going to hike Mt. Charleston or Red Rock at all? If you are just going to the strip, I guess people have different priorities.

Forget the strip. Get a car and go to the canyonlands.

Or maybe just drive down the strip once, and repeat to yourself the words of my friend, Dave: Look at all that. They didn't build this place on winners.

Then go to the canyonlands.

I made over $500 in Biloxi a few weeks ago. I was on a roll, playing Black Jack, and didn't want to tempt fate, so I quit while I was ahead. Next time, I'm going for the big bucks! If Cherokee only had tables games. :)

Yeah EZ, you really should hike around Mt Charleston while you're there..

Just remember Pinkblazing in Las Vegas may be legal, but expensive, and if you get tired of carrying around their trailmagic you can always take a cycle of antibiotics. :)

On a related note..It`s only like a 8-9 mile detour off the trail to the casino in Charlestown,West Virginia when you pass thru Harpers Ferry for all you thru-hiking gamblers....Are there any other casinos near the trail?

If you are referring to prostitution; be aware prostitution is illegal in Las Vegas (Clark County) and you will be arrested for picking someone up. If you want a prostitute go to Pahrump (Nye County) a 45min drive.

Anybody who'd pinkblaze Las Vegas with wife in tow.....man, that would be so stupid, I don't even have words for it. I plead guilty: I'd hand her the gun and give her money for the lawyer. There is already too much acreage devoted to the shallow end of the gene pool.

OK, I wouldn't hand her the gun. But I wouldn't sit on a jury and convict her, and I mean that.

When you get tired of the Strip check out hikethislasvegas.com. I am in Vegas this week and Neil did an outstanding job. Highly recommended for Red Rock Canyon Hikes.

Thanks for that! I get tired of the Strip after about one drive down it....but then, I don't have a high tolerance for cigarette smoke. As for the slot machines, once it occurred to me that I was essentially shoving coins into that thing until I could get them to all stay, the entertainment value dropped off a bit.

Still, even though they say the lottery is a tax on people who are bad at math, I buy tickets once in awhile, anyway. I don't blame anybody for dreaming.....particularly if you find it entertaining to try to count cards or remember your strategy at craps while swilling down free drinks. It's a different world, though.

I can't imagine ever paying a guide to go hiking. YMMV.

Good point for many here. In that case, though, be ready for some nasty storms on zero notice and realize that when you're lost, you might be lost....as in, worse than the Kims found themselves in Oregon.

We were in Nevada, Arizona, and southern Utah in late September, and saw some amazing electrical storms even then. The terrain in the canyonlands is difficult, the area is vast and barely populated, and the weather extremely unpredictable and can be extreme in any season. Water and warmth are not easy to come by in the desert--there is no moisture to hold the day's heat into the nights--so provide generously for yourself.

I'm not saying you have to have a guide, but to really do your homework, if you're not going to pay a guide to have done it for you.

I was getting a Master's in Statistics, but I will play the Loto. Mainly because the money goes to a good cause and if I do happen to win I am stoked.

Exactly. When you get to be forty, you realize that there's exactly one way you're ever going to have that kind of money to mess around with. In spite of the fact that people are as likely to become less happy as more happy when they hit the jackpot, it is fun to dream.

Las Vegas, however, makes no guarantees about your lost money going to a worthy cause. They just sell dreams, and bank the difference. They don't build those huge hotels on money they lost, anyway.

Which is why when I lived there I didn't gamble unless I found money on the ground or something.

Statistically one can beat Roulette. What you have to do is bet on a color, if you lose double your bet, if you lose again double your bet again. Continue to do that until you win. You will win everything back plus whatever your base bet was. My friends experimented with this. Their base bet was $5. They got up to $2100 ahead, but then they got too chicken when they had to place a large bet and ended up on $70 ahead.

Craps have the best odds. Blackjack isn't bad if you use basic strategy. What throws off roulette is the green zero and double zero.

My method actually takes the Green into account. Also, there is a way to beat Craps, but it takes a lot of skill and the Casinos don't believe it can be done. So you wouldn't get busted for doing it. There are certain ways one can hold the dice and a certain way to throw the dice that minimizes the number of bounces. When the dice is held with certain numbers up you can maximize your chance of hitting a specific number. Really cool stuff, but like I said it takes skill.

Lessons learned out West:

The biggest, most inexpensive cups of the freshest coffee can always be purchased from any bartender in a slot machine area in Vegas.

The worst coffee will be from any hotel dining room in Utah.

Well, if you hit an unlucky streak and lost 10 times in a row starting with a $25 bet you'd be out more than $25,000. That's a lot of money to make $25. And then there are table limits, where once you reach that point, you can't bet enough to recoup what you've lost. The casinos know this and the odds are always in their favor.

there are also no limit tables. I didn't say it was the best way to make money. I just said it will work.
