WHat is the best option when hiking on on mixed terrain/climate especially the AT? Boots seem to provide the best all terrain protection and ankle suppport for packloads etc. But trail shoes are much lighter or does it matter? Thoughts?

There are many discussion threads on this topic here at Whiteblaze. Try this thread (http://www.whiteblaze.net/forum/showthread.php?t=21957), or this one (http://www.whiteblaze.net/forum/showthread.php?t=21861), or this one (http://www.whiteblaze.net/forum/showthread.php?t=21717).

Like many other such discussions, the warriors are entrenched on each side. You might as well ask someone to change his religion as to change his shoes (or stove, or shelter, or water treatment, etc.).

Me, I wear trail running shoes all year in the Southern Appalachians. But you should wear that which makes you comfortable on the Trail. Have fun.
