I'm in the hammock - my dog gets a lean to if needed. If it's bad enough he goes in the hammock with me (he'll let me know when that is).
My dog was kind of freaked out by it, but that was an HH. I don't think a top loader would freak her out so much.

the dog needs to sleep underneath so he can bump your a** every time he gets up.

Depends on the size of the dog. My 20# one does well sleeping in the hammock with me. I suggest you try it in the backyard first.
my boxer slept in my eno hammcok. she was a 90 pound. and she loved it!
The dogs toenails will eventually rip the hammock fabric, then you both can sleep on the ground.:cool:
