View Full Version : Bad idea to hike Mt. Greylock in three days?

Hello. Me and a couple of friends are planning to hike Mt. Greylock starting on March 19th. We were hoping to be there for 5 days, but with all this bad weather we were unsure if this would be a bad idea. We really want to do it though because this is our only free time for a while. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Where are you hiking from/starting point ?? Dalton, Cheshire, North Adams ?? Greylock can be hiked in a single day, either up and back one side or up and over.

Should be no problem at all if you have snow shoes. It will be beautiful.

Yep, its gorgeous out there today after a few feet of new snow last night. You will definitely need snow shoes. Looks like good weather in the early part of the week too. I plan on snow shoeing up to Mt Everett one day this week.

Well, it could be some strange stuff... over here in the Boston burbs we got about six inches of nice light snow topped by about two or three inches of dense, wet stuff and rain/sleet. If this stuff freezes, it'll be ugly.

Here's an extended forecast (http://weather.boston.com/?code=5B5) for North Adams, MA. Precipitation of various kinds from now through Tuesday. Partly sunny tomorrow.

There is probably 3 feet of snow on most of the trail after this weekend's storm. The bottom foot or so is pretty consolidatated, but the new stuff will be soft and fairly wet.

No services at the summit, but you may run into one or two snowmobilers.

Plan for slow going and know your bailout possibilities.
