I retire and begin my thru hike next April . I like Whiteblazes.net tremendously . But, I can't seem to locate the answers to two curious questions that I have . The first one is probably silly?
What do you do with your packs when you enter Stores or other resupply locations ? Do they watch them for you? W:-?hat about the Wallyworlds etc
Do the resupply places on the trail usually have things like powdered milk, rice, oatmeal etc? Fresh fruit etc .I'm talking the Mom and Pop stores in the more remoted resupply locations listed in the Trail data book
I'm leaning towards a combination of trail re-supply and drop boxes . Thanks from a Newbie

:welcome to WB. The data book only has 'data'. Get either the ALDHA Companion (http://www.aldha.org/companyn.htm#companyn) or Wingfoot's Handbook (http://www.trailplace.com/). You can also check the 'articles' section here on WB. If a resupply point is listed as 'long-term resupply' it probably has everything you need. If it is listed as 'short-term resupply' it might not. Typically 'short-term resupply' points are convenience store size.

You'll figure it out as you hike, and when you get into towns, but the best advice is to keep an eye on your gear at all times. If you haven't stopped at a hostel/lodging (where your gear 'should' be safe) before resupplying, put your pack in a shopping cart and take it with you. Your hike might end abruptly if someone steals your gear (and it only takes a few seconds to pick up a backpack and go)...

See you on the trail,
