Anyone familiar with how much water is available on the Coosa Backcountry Trail (The one that starts at Vogle State Park in Georgia). I'm planning an overnite at the Coosa Bald Via this trail and can't find info on water locations. Does the visitors center offer maps with the water locations marked? Thanks

You could try this Map (http://outdoortravels.com/files/maps_ga_coosa_topotrail.jpg) or this Map (http://www.trimbleoutdoors.com/ViewTrip.aspx?tripID=5662&mode=EsriMap)

water wasnt a problem when we did it. if you plan on staying at blood mtn shelter, bring it up from slaughter gap.

What direction will you be going? I'd reccomend counterclockwise.
Water is easy to find that way up to about halfway between Calf Stomp Gap and Coosa Bald. Then no more til you tie back in with the Bear Hair Gap Trail. They do have a decent map at the office.

You'll climb first Coosa then Wildcat Knob (but really fun climbs!) then drop into Wolfpen Gap and paved GA-180. There is a stream about 50 yards to your right, either walk along the shoulder of the road to it, or cross the road and take an overgrown FS road into the woods then make your way down to the stream. There are good campsites along the stream in this area.

At Wolf Pen you can either walk the road downhill 30 yards or so (south) to where the road makes a sharp bend and a stream crosses under the road. You can access the water on the west, uphill, side of the road. Can't miss it. But there's not much shoulder on that road an sometimes and awful lot of fast motorcycles buzzing past.

Or there's an old Forest Service road on the east side of the road, right at the Gap. Used to be gated, it isn't anymore. Bushwhack downhill to the same stream. It's an open forest so it's an easy bushwhack.

No, I think you had it right the first time.

CCW is Coosa Bald, then Wildcat Knob, then Wolfpen Gap, Slaughter Mtn., etc....

Oh crap, you meant which direction for water from Wolfpen, didn't you?

Time for bed.....

thanks skidssteer and DWMHave a great hike. Some pictures:

Water's at the bend in the road (http://www.whiteblaze.net/forum/vbg/showimage.php?i=7054&catid=searchresults&searchid=7223)behind the sign.

Look for yellow birch trees (http://www.whiteblaze.net/forum/vbg/showimage.php?i=7056&catid=searchresults&searchid=7224)on Coosa. There's a big one (relatively speaking, they're small trees) very near the Geologic Service marker on the summit. Coosa Bald is the southern limit of this tree's range.

And there's a new and bigger obstacle at Wildcat Gap to keep motorized vehicles from using the trail to the Coosa summit. That portion of the trail is starting to look like a trail again instead of a ORV route.

I was with my wife parked at Vogel. I did meet two guys who said they were parked at the Gap. Must be the ones you met.
