Just a quick poll of the Whiteblaze.net membership to provide a breakdown of the types of hikers out there.

Sorry, Streamweaver, no caste implication intended. But the issues that a weekender or section hiker deal with are different in many ways than those of a long-distance hiker. New members are certainly willing to categorize themselves when they register (I know because, as the greeter, I see each and every bio), although it appears that you are more reticent. No offense intended.

Well since you put it that way lol I would have to call myself a weekender I guess.Though I do manage a couple 3-5 day trips a year ,a butt load of day hikes and I do intend to thru-hike but thats gonna be awhile yet. Streamweaver

Good to see that L.W. is not an egotist. We don't need anymore of them. I'm just going to make sure I don't hike 16,000 miles so I can maintain some degree of self respect. :D
Some days 16 miles is tough so I'm probably safe.

My oldest daughter and I were discussing this on the way to the cabin tonight,,,in her 9th grade English text book there is an incert describing thruhikers, section hikers and day hikers...I told her I am a lifetime hiker--hike anywhere and anyplace and dont mind repeating AT sections over and over (off to the Smokies again to repeat the southern-Clingmans to Fontana-section again in October... It is important for me to hike, sometimes for the wrong reasons but hopefully now for the right ones, yet I am still pushing myself as if it is a physical event, and for me it is, with out monthly section hikes that I call exam day, it forces me or I force myself to stay very active between hikes biking/swiming/treadmill/weights/etc. so the exam wont be so hard...but I love the little things, the sudden vast expanse of ferns or simply guessing how the trail will play itself out to the next road or shelter. I have always said that this country, even this world is full of awesome hikes besides the AT and thank God I have never seccumbed to the wanderlust of a thru-hike but our goals in life and hiking are like our choices of cars and dinner...dont you just love variety!

I have hiked the smokies from end to end over 9 times and in every season of the year...the same for the GA section...don't know how many times I have hiked the trail in Ga...all seasons...
I consider myself a southern appalachian specialist...and the standing Indian loop...jeez....I used to have some caches up in there

Actually, I'm a lot of different kinds of hikers, according to your list. I'm a thruhiker, a repeat thruhiker, a multiple trail thruhiker, occasional section hiker, aspiring long distance hiker (I'm not dead yet) but I am also a weekender and a dayhiker. Since I don't have a lifestyle that allows me to thruhiker every year, and I love to hike, I'll get out every chance I get, however I can, whether it be for a few hours, a few days or a few weeks. And eventually I'll get out again for a several months.

As of 9/9/03, white blazes all the way(12 times) - when I honor the trail I honor myself and the others who have walked the ENTIRE trail, and the hundreds of trail maintainers who have worked countless hours to make sure the white blazes were never broken.
I have done seven thru-hikes - my 'record hike' (solo) in 1973; the six group expeditions I organized in 1975, 1977, 1980, 1990, 1995, and 2000 (five of which had 100% completion rates); and five section hikes of the ENTIRE trail in the years between 1973 and this date (the section hikes were done during all seasons and during all times of the day/night). I hope to finish my 13th hike (section) during the first weekend of April 2005 (at Angel'sRest) and finish by 14th hike (thru) when the 2005 AT Expedition ends on Katahdin in early Sept. 2005.
