View Full Version : Seth Warner Shelter

The shelter is located about .2 miles off the trail... gets a cool breeze in evening. Can comfortably sleep about six... anymore would be tough to fit, due to posts in the middle of the floor. It has lots of tenting sites around it... though hang your food because I saw a porcupine wandering around in the morning. Water is about 500 yards past the shelter itself.

I had an absolute blast at this shelter this weekend. Lots of LT hikers and SOBO thru-hikers still coming through.

If staying at Seth Warner, hang your food carefully - it's been on the route of a marauding bear for some time now. Most recently, a LT hiker lost his food on his first night out, around 8/20

I saw a bear a few miles south of there in early August and he didn't run (refer to the "lost nerve" thread for the juicy details).

In late August I was section hiking from Stratton to little rock pond and an AT thruhiker told me that she read in the Seth Warner journal that a hiker lost her food on the night of 8/22 or 8/23. The story was that the girl hung her food from a tree, but the bear pulled the tree over and got the food.

I stayed there 2 nights ago on the last day of my Long Trail hike. Hung the food pretty high. It was safe in the morning. Of course being my last day, there wasn't much in the bag.

BTW, the guidebook says the water source may fail but the brook was flush when I was there. Then again, that followed 3 days of rain.

I stayed here on my 06 thru hike. I believe I was there sometime very late July to early August. Anyway I tented next to shelter and hung my food from the mouse hang within the shelter (as I had done since Virginia). No problems. I was alone at shelter. No signs of animals.

Seth Warner looks like it can sleep about 8. There's a bear box there now, bolted to a concrete slab. No sign of bear on 10/9/09

Is the bear box there year-round? I plan on being there in late September. I heard this shelter was a horrible place for bears during the summer of 2009.

The bear box is bolted to a concrete slab now, and yes - it's year round.

Anyone know what the condition of County Road is since last year's hurricane? Is it passable from Rt 8? Thanks.

Was just here last Saturday night. The place was flat-out packed. I've never seen so many people at a single shelter site. None of the folks there were from a scout group or church group, etc. They were all hiking, though there was a group of lady hikers who had all met from various parts of the US to come hike the AT and LT. It was a very festive atmosphere around the campfire that night. Shelter seemed to be in good repair but there was no picnic table to be found. We all just sat on logs to eat our supper. Bear box was full so most everyone hung their bearbags....about 2 feet off the ground. Awoke to chipmunks who managed to scurry down our line and had gnawed a hole in our Wal Mart ditty bag/bear bag. Last day and hated that ditty bag so no worries.

Privy is straight out from the shelter opening on a trail past the firepit. Just keep going. It's nice and far away from everything.

FarmerChef, thanks for the info. I am section-hiking through there in about 4 weeks. Looking forward to it. Sounds like the trail is busy

That's news about the bear box being full. Last time I was there it was locked.

I know there was bear activity on top Stratton Mt...maybe they unlocked the box at Seth Warner.

Did the Mass rt 2 to Vt 9 section a week or so ago. County Road is narrow but in good shape. Some complaints from other hikers that the shelter had a lot of ATV riders at it over the weekend. It is only about 1/2 mile from County Rd.

It's not that the bear box was full, the bear box was locked because hikers were leaving their trash in the boxes. So the rangers ended up licking the boxes until they finally decide what to do with them.

Enjoyed Seth Warner when I end to ended the LT in '10 - nice spot - can't remember too much except some weekenders had a "solar shower" type thing hanging from a tree - it was our first night of a super LT hike.

Does anyone know if the bear box is currently unlocked? I'm planning to do a quick section from Greylock to Route 9 next weekend and I'm going to spend a very chilly night at Seth Warner.
